“There is grossly inadequate bed capacity, dangerously inadequate critical care capacity and inadequate urgent theatre access,” said the letter, seen by the Herald. “The compromise to clinical care is now in a state that we can no longer ignore it, and it would be ethically wrong for us to stay silent.

“This has reached a crisis point ... we now are obliged to act.”

Internal conflict has erupted at a major hospital after doctors penned a damning letter describing deteriorating care triggered by a failure of leadership.

John Hunter Hospital is in crisis! The Emergency Department waiting times are unacceptably long, putting patients in critical danger and staff under continuous stress. The problem is systemic, largely due to consistent under-funding of JHH over many years. The solution will require a major system overhaul.
