Speech pathology week is a week dedicated to raise awareness for those in our community with communication difficulties.

This years theme is ‘Communicating for Life’
This theme aims to highlight the vital role that speech pathologists play across the lifespan from birth to early language all the way to age care. 1 in 7 Australians will face a communication difficulty within their life and the 2023 theme emphasises the unique skills and qualities that certified practicing speech pathology members hold to support these Australians.

A great way to focus on language development is through PLAY 🤗 when children are engaged and having fun.

There are so many great toys out there that are inexpensive and that many families already have at home.

Here is a list of 5 of our favourite go-to toys we use at the clinic with our younger kiddos and some of the go-to vocabulary we can model during play with these toys. The possibilities are endless!

Unfortunately it’s not goodbye to masks just yet! 😷
According to the new guidelines, masks still need to be worn within healthcare settings when providing face to face therapy services. This only applies to people over the age of 12yrs of age. This rule is currently being enforced across all states in Australia.

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance month and the 2nd of April is Autism Awareness day.

In Australia, one in one hundred people are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Everyday, we work to create connections and empower those within the Autism community to live fully. How can I help my child at home!

This is a question we often get asked as speech pathologists and we are here to tell you that home practice doesn’t always need to be structured. You can practice speech and language with your child in the car, during bath time even during playtime.

Car rides, whether long or short are a great opportunity to work on language development with your child.

🗣Practice re-call or memory of your child through a re-tell of the days events.
🗣A game of eye spy can be wonderful at developing your child’s vocabulary and phonological awareness. For example, instead of finding a word try "something that begins with the ‘sh’ sound" or "something that rhymes with.."

During other activities in your day such as bath time, mealtime or playtime try some of these activities:

🗣 What am I and see if your child can guess what you describe or vice versa
🗣 Labelling and talking about different items (foods, bathtoys) what they are called, parts, function, category
🗣 Book sharing and asking questions about the book (beginning, middle and end)

Do you feel like you are always correcting your child’s speech or language? Try recasting!

Recasting is one of the easiest and most effective ways a parent can help their child learn language outside of the speech therapy room! It allows the conversation to continue flowing and repeats the correct model of speech or language for the child rather than repeating the incorrect version.

🐝 Picture this: your child sees a cat and says, ‘it’s a TAT!” and your response is “oh it’s not called a tat, don’t say tat”. Your child has only heard the incorrect way of saying the word.

🐝 ENTER RECASTING! Try responding with “wow that is a CAT, isn’t it a cute CAT”. This way your child has heard how the word is said without feeling as though they are being corrected all the time!

You are not failing. Parenthood is hard. If you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself and changing the world. If you are making mistakes, you are doing things you’ve never done before and you are giving the green light to your children that it’s ok to make mistakes and not be perfect. That is the fundamental way that we all learn and acquire the lifelong skill of perseverance.
