Death Doula - Yvonne Kiel Support & guidance for the dying & their families from diagnosis to end of life care to death including dementia

Eight years ago today Victoria became the first state to pass a Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) law, paving the way for legislation to be introduced around the country.

Now the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017 is entering a new phase after a five-year review led to broad amendments making Victoria's VAD service fairer and more accessible.

Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas described the passing of the amendment bill as an important day: "Victoria's voluntary assisted dying laws are now clearer and more compassionate."

Why do the Holistic Death Doulas do what they do?
We believe that if we have the hard conversations while people are well, we can make the harder times a little gentler and kinder for everyone concerned.
We believe that people who are dying should be given the utmost care, whether in hospital, hospice, or at home, and that this care is highly personal.
Whether you have six days, six months or sixty years to live, you can always have the conversation about how you would like to be cared for as you are dying.
And Death Doulas understand about the alternatives.

It's hard to believe but we are almost at 1000 followers.

I know our beautiful mentor, Helen Bramley-Jackson, would have been so delighted.
Thank you, each and every one of you, for engaging in these important conversations.

Hi, I'm Yvonne Kiel.
I'm a Death Doula currently supporting those that are preparing to or are dying in an aged care facility and their families.
I am also a Dementia Doula providing support to navigate the ups and downs of Dementia from diagnosis to last breath.
Having cared for someone with Parkinsons disease and then Dementia for 8 years there is so much to know on many levels and so many decisions to make on this journey.
I felt alone on my journey and want to be able to support those that are feeling overwhelmed and let them know they are not alone on their journey of Dementia or Dying.
Areas that I cover are in Victoria, Kyabram, Echuca through to Swan Hill.

With Dementia becoming more and more in our lives i would like to announce that I have now completed my Dementia Doula course.
Having completed my course and having lived experience I can help support you or someone you know from diagnosis to death.
It's quite often called the long goodbye.

What does this mean for you ?

Support in navigating a Dementia diagnosis.
Helping you understand that everyday is different for someone with dementia.
Navigating the emotions that go with it for all concerned.
Talking about home care vs nursing home care and when is the right time to take that step.
Providing support what ever that maybe for you as a carer.
These are just a few things, keeping in mind there is so much more to Dementia and planning life until death.
If you or someone you know is going through this, know you are not alone and help is available.

Much love

4 days after my post about someone stepping into the active stage of dying, she did die. I sat with her for 3 weeks before her death, supporting her needs and wants to move into the acceptance of death space, ensuring she was heard and as comfortable and pain free as possible.
While I wasn't there when she took her last breath, I know she had finally accepted the next part of her life.
I was with her a few hours before she died.
Many people talk about they wish they had been there for the last breath of a loved one.
It's common for someone to take their last breath when no one is around.
And while I wasn't there for her last breath, it was an honour as a death doula to hold that space allowing her to find peace and dignity in her moment of death.
May she rest in peace.

Much Love

Thankyou to those that answered my last post. I haven't forgotten to put up my next question, but I wanted to share life at the minute.
I am currently supporting someone who is entering the active stage of dying. Someone who has not excepted that we will all die one day and has many regrets and feels she hasn't done all the things she wants to do. For the last 2 weeks I have sat with her and watch the confusion and agitation and mostly anxiety take over her. I am also her navigator for this part of her journey talking to her health care team and helping put things in place so that what ever time she has left, she will be comfortable and as painfree as possible.
It's a reminder to live your life to the fullest and hold those dear to you and tell them you love them.
Much love๐Ÿ’š

None of us know when we are going to die, so I'd like to ask a few questions over the next little while about your thoughts or even if you have thought about death and dying.
Please feel free to comment about your thoughts or even your fears.

If you can choose would you prefer to die at home or in hospital..

Death is hard and sad, but it isn't wrong. It's not a bug in the system, it has purpose.

Perhaps one of the purposes of death is to reboot the connections that hold communities together. When we grieve deeply as a group, we drop all our masks, we connect in the heart of what it means to be alive - the truth of love and loss.

Death breaks our hearts, but if we meet it well, it can break them open - to each other and to the tenderness of our shared grief.
