A free flu jab will be available to all NSW residents in a month-long blitz from June 1 in an effort to combat this year’s expected severe influenza season.

With a sharp increase in flu cases already, the NSW Government will fund flu vaccinations at GPs and pharmacies until June 30.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said there were 1,140 cases of respiratory illness notified this week, compared with 766 in the previous week and 150 presentations and admissions to hospitals.

“We strongly urge everyone over six months of age to get a flu shot as soon as possible to protect themselves and their loved ones, as the virus is easily spread and potentially deadly,” Dr Chant said.

“This is particularly important for those in high-risk groups, such as the elderly and children aged six months to five years. If you live in an aged or disability care facility, are aged over 65 or are immunocompromised, now is the time to book in.

“We also recommend a COVID-19 winter booster if you are eligible, as both flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time.”

The Commonwealth Government provides vaccines for vulnerable populations, and funds GPs through the MBS to administer vaccines. However, as COVID-19 has taught us, the role of pharmacies is crucial and the NSW Government is funding community pharmacies to deliver influenza vaccinations this June.

NSW Health has also permitted pharmacies to administer flu vaccines to children aged five years old, reduced from 10 years, making it easier for families to be vaccinated together. GPs will be reimbursed for any flu stock they have already purchased that is used in the month of June for this vaccination program.

The Commonwealth Government provides free flu vaccine for those considered to be at higher risk of severe illness from the flu, including:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from six months of age
- Children from six months to under five years of age
- People with serious health conditions (including severe asthma, diabetes, cancer, immune disorders, obesity, kidney, heart, lung or liver disease)
- Pregnant women
- People aged 65 and over.

Other protective measures individuals can take include staying at home if sick and washing your hands. Find out more about how to protect yourself from the flu at www.nsw.gov.au/flu.

If Australia is going to avoid another sustained, severe wave of COVID-19 then COVID-safe behaviours still matter.

Research backs this up - in a recent global study of non-pharmaceutical interventions (meaning that medications and vaccines were not included), masks were found to reduce COVID-19 cases by 53%.

It’s up to all of us to stay safe:

• Wear a mask indoors and on public transport
• Get tested if you have symptoms
• Catch up with friends and family outdoors
• Wash or sanitise your hands regularly

Congratulations confirming the power of touch 🙏

Ardem Patapoutian, awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, used pressure-sensitive cells to discover a novel class of sensors that respond to mechanical stimuli in the skin and internal organs.

Patapoutian and his collaborators first identified a cell line that gave off a measurable electric signal when individual cells were poked with a micropipette. It was assumed that the receptor activated by mechanical force is an ion channel and in a next step 72 candidate genes encoding possible receptors were identified. These genes were inactivated one by one to discover the gene responsible for mechanosensitivity in the studied cells. After an arduous search, Patapoutian and his co-workers succeeded in identifying a single gene whose silencing rendered the cells insensitive to poking with the micropipette. A new and entirely unknown mechanosensitive ion channel had been discovered and was given the name Piezo1, after the Greek word for pressure. Through its similarity to Piezo1, a second gene was discovered and named Piezo2. Sensory neurons were found to express high levels of Piezo2 and further studies firmly established that Piezo1 and Piezo2 are ion channels that are directly activated by the exertion of pressure on cell membranes (see figure).

The breakthrough by Patapoutian led to a series of papers from his and other groups, demonstrating that the Piezo2 ion channel is essential for the sense of touch. Moreover, Piezo2 was shown to play a key role in the critically important sensing of body position and motion, known as proprioception. In further work, Piezo1 and Piezo2 channels have been shown to regulate additional important physiological processes including blood pressure, respiration and urinary bladder control.

The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian “for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”

How’s everyone doing? Are you already feeling the strain of all the constraints we’re experiencing during the Past 18 months, I know I am!

Life has changed dramatically in such a short space of time, I’m now finding I’m moving less, not hydrating myself as much and reaching for the high sugary unhelpful snacks leaving me feeling tired, more irritable and less mobile.

It’s more important than ever to take care of ourselves and try and keep as healthy as we can.

Here’s some top tips that will help us to achieve this ...

1. Drink plenty of water and keep as hydrated as possible!

2. Eat a healthy balanced diet trying to reduce sugary snacks and try to get those 5 a day in where possible. The vital vitamins will help to boost your immunity.

3. Move, take any form of exercise you can. Even if it’s sitting in the chair anything that gets the heart rate increased and the lungs working will all have a positive benefit on the body. Exercise will help to lift your mood and make you feel good to.

4. Expose yourself to the sunshine if you can to top up your vitamin d levels which again will help your immune system.

5. Reduce stress. This might mean reducing your exposure to the news or social media, to reduce triggers that might increase your stress levels. Try to let go of anything you can not control. Focus on the things you can do.

6. Stay in contact with people. Just because you can’t physically get close to people right now it doesn’t mean no contact at all. Contact with people is so important for not only our mental health but physical health to. Message, call, text, FaceTime, Skype, email, or even write a letter but stay in touch with friends and family.

Now is the time to invest in yourself more than ever.

Take care my lovelies and remember I’m always here if you just need a chat or any help!
