Check our amazing before & after of results from our Broadband Light (BBL) treatment ✨

Broadband Light (BBL) treatment is one of our favourites because of its many benefits in the short term and long term. It is an effective means to revitalise the complexion after prolonged sun exposure, treat redness, unwanted vessels, pigmentation, or improve depleted collagen levels. BBL harmonises the skin, alleviating age spots and redness, enhancing skin texture, and minimising the appearance of pores. This comprehensive light therapy encourages a smoother, more refined visage, enabling you to redefine your complexion.

Ok, let’s look at a third aspect of skin issues associated with perimenopause and menopause.

We now know that inflammation can result in a disrupted skin barrier, and less effective skin function. We have more free radicals flying around. So skin is more reactive, wound healing may be impaired, and skin is just less resilient to environmental and solar assaults. Skin is becoming thinner, drier and less elastic so more vulnerable to solar damage. This is Photoageing.

Part of this damage effects skin colour and pigmentation. The number of melanocytes (pigment producing cells) gradually decreases. BUT the activity of the remaining cells can become irregular, producing excess melanin in uneven patches or spots. Skin cancers start to become more frequent too.
But let’s not just throw up our hands in despair and run down the beach in the middle of the day with no sun protection because, what's the point!
Oh no!
Looking after our skin might take more work than when we were 20, but a good skin routine at home and managed by professional skin clinicians (just like you will, coincidently, find at the Mayah Clinic!) can make all the difference.

Book now for a comprehensive Menopause Consultation Plan with Dr. Jane or Book a skin consultation to create a customised program of skin care with Dr. Holmes.

At the Mayah Clinic we prioritise patient care and results. None of this business of signing you up for a series of 6 of something and never checking you are getting the results we expect.

Let’s look at another aspect of how perimenopause and menopause affects our skin.

You’ve probably heard of Free Radicals? (in relation to skin, of course!) These are unstable molecules that are generated by UV rays (and we have plenty of them in Australia), environment (blue light, pollution) and lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol, high stress and poor diet.

They damage cells through oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is basically just the name given to the process causing this damage to cells, protein and DNA.
This oxidative stress accelerates aging by breaking down collagen and elastin causing wrinkles, sagging, dark spots and dullness.

Now our body is very clever and DOES have enzymes to fight this process, BUT, as our oestrogen levels drop, the activity of these enzymes that neutralise free radicals reduces. When free radicals overwhelm our skins natural antioxidant defences, we see the results in the mirror.
So! all is not lost though. As you can see there are many ways we can give our skin a fighting chance.
1/ Improve diet - less process foods, more fibre, less sugar, less bad fats, less alcohol. Make sure foods high in antioxidants are specifically included. Fruit and vege are best. Blue berries are one of the highest.
2/ Reduce stress - planned meditation. Practice the ability to go to that calm “happy place” in your mind and wind down that cortisol response.
3/ Sun protection - use a high SPF every day, with broadspectrum protection. That means protection against all the spectrum of light including fluorescent light and blue light. Rationale’s award-winning No.3 Tinted SPF 50 + serum is an example.
4/ Antioxidant skin care used daily becomes more and more important as we travel through perimenopause and menopause. VitC and Vit E can neutralise free radicals.
Rationale skin care has a specific antioxidant collection. Let us prescribe the right option for you at the Mayah Clinic.

I’m sure you know that there are many skin effects women experience starting in their 40’s, related to the hormonal changes of perimenopause.

Skin inflammation is one of them. In the perimenopause we start to see changes in the levels of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. often, if you did a blood test, they would still be in the normal range BUT relative to each other, there has been a change.

Skin inflammation happens mainly due to the reduction in oestrogen levels.
Oestrogen helps maintain skin hydration, collagen and barrier function, and is an anti-inflammatory - SO - less oestrogen means drier, thinner, more fragile and sensitive skin.

If you are struggling with the changes in your skin, book now at the Mayah Clinic. Dr. Jane Bear is offering comprehensive Menopause management, or book for a skin consultation with Dr. Holmes.

Our medical team at The Mayah Clinic has you covered.
