In 1976, nurse Cheryl Brooks buttoned up her white uniform, pinned on a badge that read “Sister Brooks,” and set off through the streets of Lakes Entrance.

She didn’t have a patient list. In fact, she didn’t have a single patient.

But that didn’t stop her...

Cheryl had just been hired as our very first district nurse. Although she admits she had “absolutely no idea what a district nurse did,” she quickly made the role her own.

“I started at Laura Street and just walked up the road,” she recalls. “Anyone with grey hair or glasses – I’d stop and say g’day. That’s how I found patients. That’s how we started.”

From pulling chooks out of the bath before running the water for a patient to quietly breaking the rules when it meant helping someone in need — Cheryl’s story is one of resourcefulness, compassion, and deep connection to the community. She’s one of dozens of former staff who’ve shared their voices in our fabulous new history project.

Happy Bi Visibility Day! 🌈 Today we celebrate bisexual people, uplift the bi+ community, and call out the myths and misconceptions that still surround them.

❌ Myth: “Bisexuality is just a phase.”
✅ Truth: Being bisexual or pansexual isn’t a stepping stone to being gay. They are both valid and entirely whole as sexualities.

❌ Myth: “You’re confused if you’re bi.”
✅ Truth: That’s totally not true. Being attracted to more than one or even all genders is totally valid.

❌ Myth: “Being with one gender makes you straight or gay.”
✅ Truth: If you’re a girl and you’re dating a boy, you can 100% still be bisexual. It doesn’t automatically shut off or become less valid because of the relationship you’re currently in

❌ Myth: “Bi people are more likely to cheat.”
✅ Truth: Cheating is about choices, not sexuality.

Bi+ people are the largest group within the LGBTQ+ community, yet still experience erasure and misunderstanding. Today is about challenging those stereotypes, celebrating bi+ history, and supporting a community that deserves to feel safe, visible and proud — every day 💖💜💙

✨ Kindergarten enrolments now open for 2026!

Did you know our kindergartens run a coastal kinder program, taking learning beyond the classroom? We make the most of the beautiful place where we live, taking children to play, explore and learn out in nature. 🦀🐚🌊🌿

From beach adventures to bush discovery walks, our students connect with the land, local wildlife and community while developing confidence, curiosity, and a love for the outdoors.

Here at GLCH, we’re more than a health care provider—we support families through every stage of life. Our kindergarten builds relationships and connections across lifetimes and generations, helping children thrive and families feel supported. 💛

✨ 50 years of first impressions, friendly faces, and the occasional seagull behind the desk! ✨

From our customer service and intake teams to our environmental services crew, our frontline workers have been the heart (and sometimes the shield!) of GLCH. You’ve greeted clients, soothed nerves, fielded the tricky questions, kept us safe, fixed stuff and kept everything running smoothly, whether the day brought smiles, tears, or a bit of both.

Over the decades, you’ve repped the organisation with pride and humour. (And yes, even Sid the Seagull had a crack at it back in the late 80s).

Here’s to you, our frontline heroes - past and present - for keeping the wheels turning and the welcome genuine for 50 years 💫

💛💛💛

Want to see more of our amazing memories from the past 50 years? Come and celebrate with us — right where it all began, at our Jemmeson Street site in Lakes Entrance.

🍔 Food, fun, entertainment and more — it’s a party you won’t want to miss!

🚭 Stronger Together for Healthier Schools!

The Gippsland Regional Public Health Unit and Gippsland Lakes Complete Health are working together on a signage audit to strengthen No Smoking, No Va**ng messages in East Gippsland schools.

📍 As part of the audit, St Mary’s Catholic and Bairnsdale Primary are the first to receive upgraded signs — creating safer, healthier spaces for every student.

Together, we’re building a future free from smoking and va**ng.

Do you know that EXERCISE has an important role both during and after treatment for cancer?

That said, it is not always easy to find a way to be consistent enough with exercise to reap the benefits at the best of times, let alone while recovering from cancer.

People may have trouble knowing where to start or what type of exercise they should be doing.

That’s where the right guidance and support can make all the difference in your success.

If you can relate to this, we have a program specifically tailored for people recovering from cancer.

The program is called ENERGISE and it is run by our Exercise Physiologist, Zac O’Rourke.

The program is focused on helping people regain their strength, fitness, and health after cancer.

"Exercise has many benefits for people both during and after treatment from cancer. As far as I can see, it is a very underutilised adjunct to treatment for cancer and powerful means of returning to good health after cancer for people in the East Gippsland region," Zac says.

Interested? Call us at 5155 8370 to book your initial assessment.

Bringing R U OK? Day spirit 💛

Today, our staff came together over lunch to pause, connect, and reflect on the power of a simple question: “R U OK?”

We are committed to improving community health and wellbeing by providing safe and accessible healthcare services directly into the communities we serve. We support people wherever they are in their life journey, with an emphasis on those who need us the most.

R U OK? Day is a reminder that meaningful conversations can make a difference. By taking the time to ask, listen, encourage action and check in, we can help create a community where no one has to face life’s challenges alone.

Every conversation matters. Let’s keep the message of R U OK? Day going—today and every day.

Leigh Przibilla, 64, from Lakes Entrance, enjoys an active retirement – travelling, golfing, boating, and helping out the family as the go-to handyman. But for years, vertigo got in the way of the life he wanted.

“I’ve had a couple of very serious vertigo attacks over the past five or six years. The worst was overseas – the walls were spinning, I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow,” Leigh said.

By chance, a friend told him Gippsland Lakes Complete Health has a neurological physiotherapist. That’s when he met Harriet Cook. She diagnosed him with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and worked with him through education and exercises to help him recover.

“I’ve had fantastic support, and the treatment worked. I wasn’t even aware there was a physio for vertigo – it opened up a whole new world to me,” Leigh said. “Even putting my head down to tie my shoelaces used to make me feel sick. Now I’m back doing everything I love, with confidence.”

BPPV can strike without warning and cause a spinning sensation or false sense of movement. While it can feel alarming, it’s not dangerous – and often, physiotherapy can resolve it quickly.

GLCH is encouraging anyone experiencing vertigo or balance problems to seek help – but it’s important to know when to act quickly. While many cases of vertigo, including BPPV, can be managed with physiotherapy, some types of vertigo require urgent medical attention. Many people live with vertigo unnecessarily, thinking it’s just part of getting older, when effective treatments are available.

This upcoming Balance Awareness Week is the perfect reminder: with the right diagnosis and treatment, vertigo doesn’t have to control your life.
