Today we celebrate the strength, diversity and contributions of transgender, non-binary and gender diverse people in our communities.

🩵 Transgender people have a gender identity different from the one assigned at birth.

🩷 Non-binary people may identify as both, neither, or somewhere beyond male and female.

🤍 Gender diverse is an umbrella term that recognises the many ways people experience and express gender.

One way we can all help create inclusive communities is through allyship. Being an ally means listening, respecting pronouns, using inclusive language and speaking up when something isn't respectful.

Learning and understanding takes time, but every step helps build a community where everyone feels seen, valued and safe to be themselves.

Keen to learn more or show your support? Check out the Trans Day of Visibility ( ) pledge — featuring powerful vision messages from the trans and gender diverse community and allies, along with videos and a simple way to make your own pledge.

There’s even a ready-to-share template if you’d like to spread the message a little further https://www.tdov.org.au/

Happy Friday 🌞 Happiness doesn’t always come from big moments. Often it’s the small things — a friendly hello, a shared laugh, helping a neighbour, or checking in on someone who might need it.

At GLCH, we see every day how kindness and connection help people live well. Whether it’s a volunteer delivering a meal, a friendly chat at a social support program, or someone offering help during a tough time, these simple acts make our community stronger.

Any day is a lovely reminder that happiness grows when we look out for one another.

💛 Say hello to someone new
💛 Check in on a friend
💛 Share a smile or a kind word.

Because a kinder community is a happier community, and that’s something worth celebrating!

If you’d like to learn more about the programs and services that help people connect, stay well and feel supported in our community, visit https://glch.org.au/

A big thank you to the Lakes Entrance Uniting Church op shop 💛

The Lakes Entrance Uniting Church op shop has donated $5000 to support people experiencing homelessness in East Gippsland.

Volunteer Sue Grundy said the contribution was only possible thanks to the generosity of locals.

“Thanks to the generous donations of goods to our op-shop, we can give back to our community, where it's needed,” Sue said.

The donation will go directly towards our homelessness support services, helping more people access the care and support they need.

Clinical Services executive manager Cheryl Bush thanked the op shop team for their generosity.

“GLCH is very aware of the growing number of people at risk of homelessness in our community, and we are establishing more homeless support services, including here in Lakes Entrance,” Cheryl said.

This support helps us continue our work with local partners to ensure people doing it tough can access health care, connection and practical help close to home.

From space to the Snowy ✨ Former NASA astronaut Dr Jeanette Epps visits Orbost

Orbost Community College students had plenty of big questions for former NASA astronaut and CIA intelligence officer Dr Jeanette Epps during her visit last week — including Grade 2 student Raven Stanaway’s standout: “Have you seen the biggest black hole in space?”

Dr Epps’ stop in East Gippsland was part of her Australian visit, where she also delivered a keynote address at the Future Ready – Driving Rural and Regional Health Forward conference, hosted by the Alliance of Rural and Regional Community Health (ARRCH) in Ballarat. We're a proud member of the alliance.

Her presentation was a major highlight for ARRCH and came about through a personal connection with CEO Anne‑Maree Kaser.

“These organisations are not just delivering care; they are designing the future of rural and regional health,” Dr Epps said.

“Their ability to innovate, collaborate and serve communities across vast geographies is exactly the kind of leadership complex systems demand.”

Dr Epps was selected by NASA in 2009 and launched to the International Space Station on NASA’s SpaceX Crew‑8 mission in March 2024. She retired from NASA in 2025 after nearly 16 years of service.

While in East Gippsland, she enjoyed visiting Salmon Rocks at Cape Conran, Raymond Island and Lake Tyers Beach.

Across both her conference keynote and school visit, Dr Epps spoke about leadership, resilience, teamwork and the power of curiosity.

“Every team I've been on has been just a group of people with different backgrounds, but we come together and we rally around our mission,” she said. “Teamwork is the foundation of being an astronaut, but also of being a good member of the community.”

She encouraged students to work hard and work together — qualities she said “win the day every time,” whether in space or in their own community.

Words matter.

They can bring people together — or push people apart.

Harmful language and discrimination have been around for a long time, but today they can spread further and faster than ever, especially online.

That’s why the way we speak, share and connect with each other matters.

💛 Choosing kindness.
💛 Choosing respect.
💛 Choosing inclusion.

These everyday actions help create safer, stronger communities where everyone feels seen, valued and like they belong.

Meet Chenjing! 👋

Chenjing’s path into early childhood began with a love of design. After studying Industrial Design at RMIT and completing her Masters at Victoria University, she became fascinated by toy design and how children learn through play.

Now an Early Childhood Educator at our Lakes Entrance service, Chenjing loves being outdoors with the children.

“I love running around outside with the kids and seeing how they share the swings and interact with each other.”

Originally from China, Chenjing moved to East Gippsland with her partner and now calls Kalimna home.

“I’m enjoying Lakes Entrance — I’m an ocean person.”

If you’re looking for a place where educators genuinely love what they do, we’d love to hear from you.

Kindergarten and childcare places available Monday to Friday.

Today is Close the Gap Day 🖤💛❤️ It’s a time to reflect on the health and life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians, and the role we all play in creating a fairer future.

Here on Gunaikurnai Country, where we live and work, we recognise the strength, culture and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In 2025, we celebrated 50 years of service to our community. For the past 20 years, we’ve worked alongside the Lakes Entrance Aboriginal Health Association (LEAHA) to support the health and wellbeing of the local Aboriginal community.

At our 50-year celebration, we were deeply honoured to receive a message stick from LEAHA Chair, Lisa Giblin — a powerful symbol of connection, respect and walking forward together.

The message stick tells a story:
• People coming together on Tatungalung Country
• Standing strong and keeping the fire burning
• Waterways creating new paths
• Walking the journey side by side
• And the kangaroo print representing LEAHA.

It’s a reminder that real change happens through strong relationships, shared understanding and walking together. [Artwork by Paula Harrison].
