Strong but stiff?
Flexible but weak?
Fit but lacking strength?
Strong but not very fit?

Or maybe a bit of everything? 🤔

Yoga can tap into all of them and fill the gaps.

It can build strength, mobility, balance and fitness all at the same time.

It’s probably not going to send your VO₂ max through the roof like a hard cardio session… but it can improve your fitness — especially depending on where you’re starting and the style of yoga you’re doing.

Yoga trains the links in the chain, not just one piece of the puzzle. 🧩

The man, the myth, the legend!

As you can see… Tony is so thrilled to have this photo with me. 😂

Tony probably isn’t the first person you’d imagine walking into a yoga class… but that’s exactly why we love having him here.

Since starting, he’s come a long way. He’s battled through plenty of old injuries — especially the knees — but he still shows up week after week, puts in the work, and keeps making great progress.

His commitment to yoga, the RSL, and our little community is pretty special.

Just goes to show… yoga really is for everyone. 👏😁

What’s ya problem…?! 😅
I know what! You’re probably upper trap dominant (most of us are, including me 🤦‍♀️)

In Power & Functional Yoga, we will be focusing on lower and mid traps!

How: Prone Y & T raises
(boring I know 🙄)

Why:
When you are upper trap dominant
• Your shoulders elevate and tighten
• Your posture can suffer (rounded shoulders)
• Neck and shoulder tension
• Restricted overhead movement

Watch out for:
• Lifting too high → upper traps take over
• Shrugging shoulders → neck works instead
• Thumbs down → shoulders roll forward
• Moving too fast → momentum replaces muscle
• Arching lower back → traps don’t fire

Tip: Go slow, small, and controlled — feel it between your shoulder blades, not your neck or lower back!

This lovely lady definitely deserves a mention. One thing I notice most about Fiona is her determination to work through challenging poses and those intense holds in every class (and she always remembers to breathe!).
She also has such a warm heart and brings a beautiful energy to the room whenever she walks in.
Fiona practices yoga at home as well, and it’s wonderful to see her strength continuing to improve.
Well done, Fiona! We love having you in the class. 👏🧘‍♀️✨

DO SINGLE LEG SIT TO STANDS!
My functional yoga favourite 😬

Why?
- Real life is mostly one leg at a time
- Single leg work exposes weaknesses
- We all have a dominant side so this will help correct strength imbalances
- Improves control through hips and pelvis

Option 1: Keep ball of supporting foot connected to the floor.
Option 2: Balance foot off the floor.

You can do these off a chair or for an extra challenge find something lower (like a coffee table). Aim for 10-12 reps each leg x 2 or 3 rounds 😬

Kath and her assistance dog Jess joined us for chair yoga at East Bairnsdale Community Hub yesterday, supported by Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH).
Jess has a beautiful calming presence and helps keep us grounded throughout the session — not to mention he’s an instant mood lifter the moment he walks through the door!
I’m also pleased to report he found the meditation so relaxing… he fell asleep! 🐾💛

Yoga doesn’t stop when the class finishes.
My regular yogis have built greater BODY AWARENESS which they are carrying through into their daily lives. This is so invaluable!
They notice their posture, tightness, movement and breathing. If they forget I have given them a print out of MY top 10 tips. I’m proud of lovely Gaye for sticking with me for so long! 👏😁
