Reducing masking starts with strengthening safety. That means paying attention to emotional, physical, and relational cues, not just behaviour.

What helps with Emotional Safety?
• responding to big feelings without punishment or shame
• accepting “no” as communication, not defiance
• lowering demands when emotions run high
• separating feelings from behaviour (“I see you’re upset” rather than “stop”)

What helps with Physical Safety?
• allowing movement, fidgeting, or stepping away
• not forcing eye contact, sitting still, or physical closeness
• offering sensory support only if it’s wanted
• respecting body boundaries consistently

What helps with Relational Safety?
• staying calm and connected during hard moments
• repairing after ruptures (“That was hard. I’m still here.”)
• not withdrawing attention after dysregulation
• showing curiosity instead of judgement

Masking can hide a child’s needs, even when things look “fine” on the surface. At AAA, we’re careful to look beyond appearances and support children to feel safe enough to unmask, in their own time.

This time of term, it can become harder for some children to keep everything “together.” We often see this when masking starts to take more effort.

Masking is when a child hides parts of themselves to meet expectations or fit in.
It’s not about choice, it’s about feeling safe.

Masking can look like:
🟣 holding it together at sessions or school
🟣 increased exhaustion or irritability
🟣 bigger emotional releases later
🟣 withdrawal or shutdown

At AAA, we work to create spaces where children don’t need to hide who they are to belong. Unmasking isn’t rushed or forced. It happens slowly, through safety, trust, and relationships.

Co-regulation is about being a calm, steady presence for a child when their emotions or sensory experiences feel overwhelming.

At AAA, co-regulation is woven through the day. In practice, that looks like:
đź’śusing a calm, steady voice and reducing how much we say
đź’śpausing or lowering demands when a child is overwhelmed
đź’śstaying nearby with a relaxed posture to signal safety
đź’śadjusting the environment to reduce sensory load (light, noise, activity)
đź’śslowing ourselves down first: because children borrow regulation from the adults around them
đź’śremembering that this moment will pass, and that regulation matters more than completing a task

Co-regulation doesn’t mean fixing the feeling or talking it through in the moment. It means offering consistent cues of safety and connection so a child’s nervous system can settle.

Not all sensory input does the same thing.

Some activities calm the nervous system.
Some increase alertness.
Some do both - depending on the child.

In our sessions, we have experimented, reflected and tuned in to how our bodies responded.
Awareness is the first step to regulation đź’ś

What does neuro-affirming mean at AAA - in practice?

At All About Autism, being neuro-affirming isn’t a philosophy we talk about. It's how we work day to day.

That means:
đź’śchildren have autonomy over their bodies, attention, and participation
đź’śregulation and wellbeing come before learning or skill-building
đź’ś different ways of communicating and engaging are respected
đź’ś behaviour is understood in context, not managed for compliance
💜children don’t need to hide who they are to belong

This poster came out of a group conversation about meltdowns.

We spent time talking openly and honestly about what meltdowns feel like, what makes them harder, and what helps. Each child shared from their own experience, and together we created a poster (with a bit of help from Chat GPT's design skills!) to capture those thoughts.

At AAA, this kind of shared understanding matters.
When children feel safe to talk about their experiences, without judgement or pressure, it builds connection, reduces anxiety, and supports emotional regulation over time.
