📚 Saturday Book Week Pick from OT Lorraine: Paddington 🐻🧳🥪

Children love this curious little bear and the way he finds himself in tricky situations — and it gives us so many opportunities for learning.
In OT sessions, I love using Paddington to:

🛁 Talk about daily living skills (like washing, cooking, or getting dressed) when Paddington muddles things up
🗣️ Practise social communication and problem solving — “What could Paddington have done differently?”
🧠 Explore flexibility and resilience, noticing how Paddington keeps trying even when things don’t go to plan
🤝 Discuss friendship and belonging

Stories like Paddington remind us that mistakes are part of learning, and that kindness and persistence help us grow 💛

📚 Friday Book Week Highlight: In My Heart 💗

This beautiful book explores all the different ways a heart can feel — happy, brave, sad, afraid, shy and more. It’s a lovely way to help children learn that emotions come in many shapes and sizes, and that every feeling is okay. 🌈❤️

In OT sessions, Leona loves using In My Heart to:
🗣️ Support emotional expression — helping children to build their emotional vocabulary- a necessary element of emotional regulation skills
🧠 Teach regulation strategies — talking about what can help our heart feel calm when it’s racing or worried
🎨 Incorporate creativity, like drawing their own “heart feelings”
🤝 Build empathy, by exploring how different people might feel in different situations

📚 Thursday Book Week Feature: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt 🐻🌿🪵👣💨🌲

This timeless classic is more than just a fun adventure — it provides a wonderful platform for supporting sensory processing, language development, and emotional regulation in children.

OTA Mia shares her favourite ways to use this book in OT sessions:
👣 Acting out the story in the OT gym — stomping through long grass, crawling under trees, and tip-toeing over bridges to build gross motor skills, body awareness and motor planning
📍 Using the language in the story to teach prepositions — over, under, through, behind, in and out — and helping children link the words with actions
💛 Exploring the story’s emotions of excitement, adventure, courage, facing something scary!

📚 Wednesday Book Week Pick from OT Anna: Room on the Broom

One of my favourite children’s books is Room on the Broom! 🧙‍♀️🧹🐱🐶🐸🐦🐉
Children absolutely love the rhythmic storytelling and funny characters — but it’s also a brilliant way to support early social skills, language development and problem solving.

In sessions, I often use this book to:
🧩 Practise sequencing and attention — retelling the order of who joins the broom and what happens next
🗣️ Build vocabulary and descriptive language — “Who found the hat?” “What does the dragon look like?”
🤝 Explore themes of friendship and helping others — talking about how each animal supports the witch, and how the witch includes everyone
🎭 Act out the story to support motor planning, turn-taking, and body awareness (pretending to fly on the broom or build the mud monster together!)

📚 Tuesday Book Week Spotlight: Let’s Try Again Another Day

This beautiful story helps children learn that it’s ok to have tough moments — and that we can pause, regulate and try again. We love using this book in OT to support emotional regulation, self-compassion, and building resilience.
It opens up gentle conversations about what helps our bodies and brains feel calm when things don’t go to plan 💛 Love Tara

📚 Monday’s Book Week Spotlight: The Gruffalo 🛤️🦊🦉🐍

This classic story by Julia Donaldson is a fantastic tool for supporting children’s language, regulation and social-emotional development.

Here are some themes our OT Shauna loves exploring through The Gruffalo:

❤️ Emotional Regulation & Exploring feelings (e.g. fear, bravery, confidence) and discussing what we might do in those situations

👣 Motor & Imaginative Play: Acting out the story can provide opportunities for gross motor, proprioceptive and vestibular input (e.g. stomping like the Gruffalo, tip-toeing like the mouse) Or going on an ‘adventure’ obstacle course’through the forest’🌳 to find all the creatures 🐍🦉🦊🤎

🗣️ Communication & Social Skills - Talking about how Mouse uses problem solving and assertive communication to stay safe.

🧸 Supporting Kids Through Transitions💡

Transitions can be tough for children - moving from one activity to another, switching environments, or even going from playtime to bedtime. These moments can feel overwhelming and unpredictable.

Here are a few simple, effective strategies to help support children during transitions:

🧸 Comfort objects
Let them hold a favorite soft toy or fidget during changes. These can be grounding and provide emotional comfort.

🧘‍♀️ Calming tools
Try blowing bubbles or deep breathing. These techniques can soothe and regulate emotions.

⏳ Timers
Visual timers help children see how much time is left. Great for preparing them for what’s coming next.

📊 Visual schedules
Use pictures or icons to map out the day. Visual cues can reduce anxiety and help kids know what to expect.

🔉 Reduce sensory load
Lower the noise or dim the lights during tricky transitions.

📉 Lower demands
Give choices when possible, and keep expectations simple and clear. Transitions are not the time to pile on pressure.

✨Pretend play isn’t just fun - it’s how kids learn! 📚🧠
Storybooks like Clive is a Waiter, Clive and His Baby, and Bluey: The Doctor are amazing tools for sparking imaginative play. They give children a rich foundation of ideas, language, and social scenarios to act out - helping them explore different roles, routines, and emotions. 🧸💬🩺
Using books in play can:
📖 Support language development
💡 Boost creativity and flexible thinking
👯 Encourage social interaction and empathy
🧠 Strengthen attention, planning, and sequencing skills
Try reading one of these stories, then set up your own play scene at home! What role will your little one take on today? 🍽👶🩺
