It is with tremendous sorrow that I am sharing with you the news of Jennifer’s passing. Jennifer was such a bright light in our AAC community and in my life. Her passion for AAC, her creativity, her kindness — they came through in everything she did, from her incredible posts to the way she showed up for her students, her colleagues, and everyone who used AAC. I’m so grateful for the memories, the laughter, the learning, and the heart she brought to all of it. Please take a moment to visit and let her words keep inspiring you, just as they will continue to inspire me. My heart is broken. Rest peacefully, my a an sweet friend. 🩷

So this is how my week ended! It’s not what I had planned for this session - it was meant to be a Valentine’s craft, but someone had other ideas! It’s been cold here in Vancouver and, well, Minions don’t do well in the snow! Every little detail of this project communicated via eye gaze, PAS, smiles, and laughter! Thank you, Miss Navya! Happy Valentine’s Day🩷❤️🩷

chickadee.aac and I were honored to present at Closing the Gap in October 2023, and even more honored when they asked us to prepare an article for their journal, Closing the Gap Solutions! The article, titled “Successful Strategies for Teaching AAC Communication Partners “, appears in the August/September 2024 online edition, and is jam-packed with tips and strategies to help you target the skills that build upon and elicit communication in our AAC clientele! I made a SCARY mistake today! I wore this sweater during a visit with a student who has CVI😳 He could not pull his attention away from it, to the point where I had to put my jacket ( black, thankfully!) on over it for the session! I normally wear a solid black shirt with kiddos with CVI to reduce clutter and distractions; oh well, live and learn!

Mr. J has proudly prepared a fresh fruit salad for me before every single session for the past year, and we spend the first few minutes just chatting while we enjoy our snack! At 7, he is so generous and thoughtful - as all my clients are! I have been blessed to find myself in a profession that I love, with clients I look forward to seeing every session! I am truly grateful for each and every one of you 🧡Happy Canadian Thanksgiving 🧡

In this photo, Miss A is reviewing a spelling lesson from Making Words using a magnetic white board and letters, her messages page and/or a yes/no strip. She told me this was too easy for her! And it’s true - she had the summer off and I wanted to review a bit before launching into our new learning year!
The presence of complex physical needs, such as those often seen in Rett Syndrome, does not mean that a child will have an intellectual impairment! In fact, girls with Rett Syndrome are dispelling this myth every day and are now reaching heights in their personal learning that were unheard of in the past! Learning to spell, read, and write is hugely important when you cannot speak - when you can read and write, there is nothing you cannot say and no world you cannot discover! Presume potential and make academics happen!
