A journey back to Brisbane Street, circa 1935 🕰️🏛️

We love this glimpse into our city's past. If you look closely at the dome of the Princess Theatre in the background, you can see the advertisement for the film "Go Into Your Dance"—dating this scene perfectly to late 1935.

For the Finney family, this photo captures a significant era of growth. In 1931, C.T. Finney & Sons moved to Brisbane Street, introducing motorised hearses and operating an extensive joinery factory at the rear of the building.

Next time you’re in the Launceston CBD, keep an eye out! Although we moved to our current locations some time ago, you can still spot the original Finney signage on the building today. It stands as a quiet reminder of our century-long journey with the people of this city.

While the trams no longer rattle down the street, our commitment to Tasmanian families remains exactly the same as it was when this photo was taken 💜

FAQ: "What happens to the coffin during cremation?"

✖ Myth: A common misconception is that the coffin is removed or reused, this is simply not true.

✅ True: At Finney Funeral Services, the only thing removed from the coffin or casket prior to cremation is the nameplate. This nameplate stays with your loved one to ensure 100% correct identification throughout the entire process at the crematorium. The coffin and its hardware are cremated entirely.

With trust, care, and support as the foundation of our services, we are happy to answer any questions you have about planning a funeral.

"Love is like the fallen leaf; it nourishes the ground for everything that comes next." 🍂

As the leaves fall, they don't simply disappear; they return to the earth, providing the strength and nourishment for the new growth that will eventually follow.

We believe the same is true of the people we love.

A life well-lived leaves behind a legacy that continues to support, guide, and nourish those who remain. Even when someone is no longer with us, the love they planted in our hearts stays behind, becoming the foundation for the memories we share and the strength we find in each other.

At Finney’s, we are honored to help you celebrate these lasting legacies. As you watch the leaves turn this month, we hope you find peace in the beautiful, enduring cycle of life. 🤍

Should jewellery stay with your loved one? 💍

Deciding what to do with jewellery is a very personal choice. At Finney Funeral Services, we want you to have the information you need to make the right decision for your family (if this isn't already specified in the will).

- Keepsakes:
Many families choose to have jewellery removed to keep as a precious memento or to pass down through generations.

- Leaving it in place:
If you choose to leave jewellery with your loved one for a cremation, please be aware that because of the soft compounds in precious metals, these items will disintegrate during the cremation process, but it will always be with them.

Our team will always confirm your wishes regarding jewellery and personal items before the service. We are here to ensure your loved one is cared for exactly as you intended. 🤍

🌹Our wicker coffins made from sustainably grown willow are a beautiful choice for those exploring eco-friendly memorial options.

Why many Tasmanians choose wicker:
- Each basket is hand-woven using traditional methods, free from glues, plastics, or metals.
- Willow is a rapidly renewable resource, making it one of the most earth-conscious sustainable options available.
- They are more aesthetically pleasing than some other eco-friendly options. Families often choose to tuck wildflowers or handwritten notes into the weave as a final, personal touch.

"The very first Easter taught us this: that life never ends, and love never dies." — Kate McGahan 🕯

As the Tasmanian landscape settles into the quiet beauty of autumn, we are reminded that love is a constant, unchanging light through every season.

Easter is a time for hope, reflection, and gathering with those who matter most. Our thoughts are with the families who are holding a special place in their hearts for someone missing from the table this year.

May the warmth of shared memories bring you a deep sense of peace today.

From our family to yours, we wish you a hopeful and safe Easter Sunday 🤍

A view of Launceston in 1929 ✨

We love seeing these glimpses into our city's past. This incredible shot of Percy Stevenson working on St John’s Church was taken in August 1929. Even back then, the Finney family was busy serving the Tasmanian community.

This photograph is a great reminder of the craftsmanship and courage that built the place we all call home. If anyone has any images of Northern Tasmania's past, we'd love to see them.

Memory from Launceston Library.

It’s not quite working on the high steel, but what a view!
In August of 1929 Percy Stevenson was one of the crew working on the extensions to St John’s Church. Towards the end of the 19th century it became apparent that the church was no longer big enough.
Construction began in 1902 with a separate building that was finally connected to the original church in the 1930s.
Some brave photograph would have had to cart his gear quite a way up to capture this shot. Percy is totally unphased.

Traditional Funeral or Memorial Service: Understanding the difference 🕊️

When it comes to saying goodbye, there is no "one size fits all". At Finney Funeral Services, we help you choose the path that best honours your loved one’s legacy.

The Traditional Funeral
- Timing: Held typically within 1–2 weeks of passing.
- Presence: The coffin or casket is present, serving as a focal point for the farewell.
- Feel: A structured ceremony with readings, music, and a formal committal.

The Memorial Service
- Timing: Can be held weeks or even months later, allowing more time for travel.
- Presence: Usually held after a private cremation or burial; often with an urn or a framed photo as the centerpiece.
- Presence: Usually held after a private cremation or burial; often with an urn or a framed photo as the centrepiece.

Both options provide a vital space for grieving and connection. Whether you prefer the comfort of tradition or the flexibility of a modern memorial, we are here to help bring the details together. When it comes to saying goodbye, there is no "one size fits all". Our team can help you choose the path that best honours your loved one’s legacy.

A gentle reminder: You have permission to feel 🤍

Grief has its own pace... it doesn’t follow a calendar. While life around you moves quickly, your heart may need more time. Whatever you are feeling—sadness, nostalgia, or even a sense of relief—know that it is completely valid.

Today, give yourself permission to:
- Say “no” to social events if you need rest.
- Share a memory of your loved one, or simply sit in quiet reflection.
- Take things one moment at a time.

You are not “doing it wrong.” You are navigating a difficult path, and we are holding you in our thoughts.
