With the warmer weather at the moment it is extremely important to keep up on hygiene.

Here are a few tips and tricks for our AFO (ankle foot orthotic) wearer's.

Wipe down your AFO's with a damp cloth and soapy water, dry with a towel or leave to air dry. Make sure your skin and the AFO are both dry before putting on.

Use long wrinkle free socks to help absorb sweat and keep you cooler, a sprinkle of talcum powder can be a gem to help stop odours.

If you have a removable liner, clean it regularly, there's only so much talcum power can do.

Ensure you wipe of sand and dirt, probably best to do this outside, the playground or beach are not meant to be indoors.

Our Elf has been able to get himself in some tight squeezes the last week.

As you can see here, at LOPS we aren't only about lower limbs when we are talking Orthotics and Prosthetics.

Whether it be an arm, a hand or a finger amputation, our Prosthetist's will take the time with clients to work on functional outcome for them.

While the Naked finger isn't meant to be a full arm splint as our Elf is demonstrating, Naked hand prosthetics are designed to assist finger and partial hand amputees to get back to work and doing the things that they love with confidence and dexterity.

If you are a full hand amputee, the Elves' in our workshop will work with you to create a custom made prosthetic suited for purpose (they just hope that the purpose isn't to squeeze them like the Elf).

We also offer wrist, hand and finger orthotics for those suffering from pain, RSI, or arthritis, made an appointment to speak with on our clinicians.

Elf was once again helping out in the work shop adding some straps to a cuff.
We left him to it, until things went a little wrong and he needed some help.

At LOPS we maintain, repair and service all Orthotics and Prosthetics as well as custom making them (generally without the assistance of elves).

On Friday, we came in to find our little Elf friend trying to help Rachel make a pair of AFO's.
I'm not sure how much help he was though.

Our clinician's (and elves) understand that every client has unique needs and requirements.

AFO's (Ankle/Foot orthotics) are fitted for a variety of reasons in the young and aging to help control alignment in the ankle to the foot, increase mobility, reduce pain or assist in preventing deformity.
Depending on the need of the individual they may be hinged (made to bend at the ankle joint) or solid (no ankle movement).

This is a friendly reminder of the importance of drinking plenty of water now that the weather is warming up.

This is especially crucial for our prosthetic clients.
Our skin is our largest breathing organ. With less skin surface area you may find is harder to reduce your body temperature.
Using a prosthetic requires greater energy expenditure, therefore your body gets warmer and sweats more.
Please ensure that you are adequately hydrated, wear light breathable clothing and change your stump socks and liners frequently if they get damp from sweat.
