🩺 Sepsis Awareness at Calvary St Vincent’s and St Luke’s 🩺

To mark Sepsis Awareness, Calvary St Vincent’s and St Luke’s recently hosted a staff competition to help shine a light on this critical health issue. The response was fantastic—and the votes are in!

🎉 Congratulations to the Patient Administration Team, whose powerful poster and standout catchphrase—“Sepsis is Serious: Know the Symptoms, Know the Signs”—earned them the top spot.
The team was awarded a gift card in recognition of their efforts.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped raise awareness. Every conversation about sepsis could save a life.

🌼 Spring Food Drive Success – Thanks to Our Generous Staff! 🌼

The City Mission Spring Food Drive is a powerful initiative that supports individuals and families in need.

Our incredible staff at Calvary St Luke’s and St Vincent's displayed their willingness to give by donating essential items like tinned goods, toiletries and more. These donations will go directly to City Mission, whose tireless work helps countless families throughout the year.

Appreciate the little things in life is the theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day which is today, 10 October.

Our Day Therapy Unit is a respectful place that is not just a clinical setting, but a place of healing and growth. The Unit provides access to services for Tasmanian's and our next program starts soon.

Using art therapy is just one approach towards addressing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. At present, the Day Therapy Unit has an Art Exhibition on display (until October 15) that features some artwork created throughout the program. You can also visit this exhibition daily from 2.00pm to 8.00pm, level 2, St Luke's Hospital at Lyttleton Street, Launceston.

There are two things you will need to do to register for the program: ensure you are have a GP or psychiatrist's referral, and you will need to attend a pre-admission clinic. You must also be at least 18 years of age.

🌟 Celebrating Compassionate Care at Calvary St Vincent’s and St Luke’s 🌟

At Calvary St Vincent’s and St Luke’s, we’re privileged to have a dedicated team of staff who share one core mission: delivering the highest standard of care to our patients throughout their stay. With so many hands and hearts involved in that journey, it’s not always easy to pause and acknowledge individual contributions—so it’s truly special when recognition comes through.

This week, we received a heartfelt token of appreciation from a recent patient, Ms Long, who wanted to acknowledge Rebecca Davern for her warmth and genuinely caring approach. Rebecca is a valued member of our Hospitality Division, and you’ll often see her brightening mornings as she delivers breakfast or offers a comforting drink—always with a smile.

It’s moments like these that remind us how every role contributes to the core values of Calvary through hospitality, healing, stewardship and respect. Congratulations to Rebecca on receiving her thank-you parcel, and thank you for bringing kindness to every corner of the ward!

Calvary St Luke’s Enters Into Partnership Agreement With Launceston General Hospital

Calvary St Luke’s Hospital has entered into a strategic partnership with Launceston General Hospital (LGH) to temporarily share its Melwood Ward, providing vital support while LGH undertakes critical infrastructure upgrades. Under the agreement, Calvary will make 23 beds available for LGH’s rehabilitation patients, ensuring continuity of care during the hospital’s planned heating and cooling system improvements.

“This partnership is a strong example of Calvary’s commitment to working collaboratively with public health providers to maintain high-quality healthcare access for northern Tasmanians,” said Ms Kate Pryde, General Manager of Calvary St Luke’s Hospital.

“We’ve worked closely with the LGH team to meet their temporary need for ward space, allowing them to proceed with essential air-conditioning upgrades that will better serve contemporary patient needs,” she added.

Ms Pryde emphasised that Calvary remains committed to supporting both public and private patients: “This is a unique and positive arrangement that ensures public patients continue to receive essential services, while Calvary maintains access for its own patients across both Launceston campuses.”

Launceston General Hospital has welcomed the collaboration, which enables it to move forward with its planned infrastructure improvements. LGH will continue to provide all clinical care for its patients accommodated in Melwood Ward. The temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place until mid-2026, when LGH’s upgrade works are scheduled for completion.

🎨 Mental Health Week Art Exhibition Launch at Calvary St Luke’s

On Monday, 6 October, Calvary St Luke’s proudly hosted the official launch of its Mental Health Art Exhibition on Level 2 with the theme of "Appreciate the Little Things"; marking a meaningful start to Mental Health Week.

The exhibition showcases a diverse array of creative expressions—including crocheting, knitting, painting, origami, photography, and pottery—highlighting the therapeutic power of art in mental health recovery. Attendees were invited to participate in interactive activities, such as sharing one thing they were grateful for and engaging in conversations with unfamiliar faces, fostering connection and encouraging open dialogue.

Kate Pryde, General Manager of Calvary St Vincent’s and St Luke’s, officially opened the event with a heartfelt recognition of the artistic talent showcased throughout the exhibition. She also paid tribute to the vital role of carers—both personal and professional—whose ongoing support is essential to those navigating the complexities of mental health.

Amanda Aitken from the Mental Health Council of Tasmania addressed the audience, expressing her enthusiasm for the relaunch of the Mental Health Day Therapy Unit. She also spoke about the Council’s “Take a Minute” initiative, available via their app at https://ow.ly/t3NX50X7vcP, which promotes mindfulness and mental wellbeing.

Dr George Hyde spoke about the future direction of the Unit, emphasising the critical need for accessible mental health services across Tasmania. He noted that the relaunch represents a significant step toward reducing barriers and expanding support for those in need.

🖼️ Exhibition Details
Location: Level 2, Calvary St Luke’s Hospital, 24 Lyttleton Street, Launceston

Happy Retirement Dr Hung Nguyen!

Theatre staff at St Vincent's Hospital yesterday came together with Dr Nguyen to wish him a fond farewell after completing his final theatre list for the day as he retires from private practice. Dr Nguyen has been a significant part of the Calvary history, with over 20 years involvement and countless theatre sessions taking place under his steady hands and watchful eyes.

Since July 2021, our system shows that he has completed 1,190 procedures within Calvary theatres. That's an incredible 297.5 surgeries per year!

Calvary St Vincent's and St Luke's management and staff would like to take this opportunity to wish Dr Nguyen all the very best for the future and send sincere thanks for his prodigious contributions.

Friday Footy Finals Fever!

In the spirit of all things Footy, Calvary staff today joined in on the Feline Fine Footy Fever and wore their team's colours to work for the day.

Our cafe's were providing meat pies with sauce, and donations that were collected during the day will be going to the Fight Cancer Foundation to help kids with cancer.

Here's a few of the photos from today of our awesome Calvary Staff. It was clear to see that Michelle from our Patient Administration area is quite the passionate footy supporter!

Whatever you're doing to celebrate Footy Finals Fever - be safe and enjoy your day.

Would you know where to go for mental health assistance if you or a loved one required help?

St Luke’s Day Therapy Mental Health Unit serves the local community with strong mental health support; you can read more through the website link featured at the bottom of this post.

Rather than focusing on “counselling”, the unit uses an evidence-informed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) approach to help individuals understand their mental health and to build personal resilience.

There are two things you will need to do to register for the next program in October: ensure you have a GP or psychiatrists’ referral, and you will need to attend a pre-admission clinic. You must also be at least 18 years of age.
