Voluntary Opportunity: Looking for a good friend/advocate aged 50+

We are looking for someone with a great sense of humour, who is patient and kind and willing to assist a lady with a disability who is lonely, isolated and vulnerable to improve their life circumstances, help her to access the community and be willing to speak up for her if needed.

It would be perfect if this person also had experience with people with memory loss.

No qualifications are required but your desire to help others.

Orientation and ongoing support in order to fulfill this role will be provided to the right applicant.

To close our Citizen Advocacy video series, we’re honoured to share Gary and Gerard’s story.

Gary and Gerard’s connection began through athletics decades ago. When Gerard later faced significant challenges, Gary became his advocate. With steady encouragement and support, Gerard rebuilt his confidence and independence. Fourteen years later, their enduring friendship reflects the power of trust and commitment.

Citizen Advocacy Launceston Region has been deeply embedded in the local community since 1989, working to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities are included, respected, and protected. Our organisation operates as a not-for-profit and charitable entity, providing a unique, person-to-person advocacy service that is driven entirely by community involvement.

Their relationship is a wonderful example of how advocacy grows out of trust and genuine friendship. Amanda walks beside Deb, but it’s Deb’s life, choices, and goals that shape their journey together.

With the help of our wonderful videographer Alex we’ve been capturing a series of short videos highlighting some of the wonderful relationships between people and their citizen advocates.

These stories are real examples of trust, friendship, and standing beside someone as they navigate life.

Thank you to our Advocates who attended our "Advocate Catch Up – Mind Mingle" event. A truly enjoyable night was had, filled with trivia, games, conversations, and food and drinks.
