There are many reasons that could cause knee pain and stiff/seized (difficult to bend) knees.
Consult medical doctor to determine whether it is due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, compressed miniscule, issue with (lack of) synovial fluid, or other reasons.
Weakness of VMO muscles rarely been cited as a reason for knee pain. But weakness in that segment can cause the patellas to move in ways that injure, thus damage the knee joints under the patellas. Causing inflammation. Hence the pain. And the visibly swollen knee joints. At times burning sensations in some cases.
For me, every now and then, perhaps once (or twice) in a year, whenever I experience sore knee, I simply apply acupressure at certain points, and then gently rub the region with a type of Chinese ointment, and the pain will normally go away quite soon.
