🙏🙏
👋 Meet Chet Sapkota, Clinical Nurse Consultant at Rapid Access Service in the Older Persons Mental Health Service.
Rapid Access Service is a specialist in-reach older persons mental health service that provides rapid assistance to consumers in Residential Aged Care Facilities who are experiencing dementia with severe to extreme Behavioural & Psychological Symptoms in Dementia (BPSD).
“Our team provides a streamlined, timely and person-centred approach to care. We aim to reduce preventable hospitalisations by helping aged care staff and families with expert assessments, care planning and behaviour management.”
Since taking on this role in late 2023, Chet has brought over a decade of experience in aged care nursing and management, with a strong focus on advocacy for older person’s mental health.
Chet’s passion for mental health began early in his nursing career. “I saw big gaps in support for older persons with mental health challenges,” he says.
“Their vulnerability, coupled with the complexities of ageing and dementia, really moved me. I felt compelled to advocate for their rights and wellbeing and to help bridge the gap between aged care and mental health services.”
Chet was recently named a finalist in the Mental Health Council of Tasmania Mental Health and Wellbeing Award, part of the 2025 Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards, a recognition that he says is both meaningful and humbling.
“This nomination reflects the collective efforts of our team and highlights the importance of specialised mental health care for older people, especially those living with dementia. I feel inspired and motivated to continue advocating for quality, dignified care in this often-overlooked area of healthcare.”
What Chet loves most about his work is the chance to connect with people and provide care that respects their dignity. “Supporting someone with complex needs to find stability and comfort is deeply rewarding.” he shares. “It’s about making a real, human difference every day.”
Reflecting on his career, Chet says one of the most rewarding parts has been seeing the positive impact of the Rapid Access Service. “Helping residents with severe BPSD stay safety in their familiar environment and supporting their carers is fulfilling.”
His message to young people starting out in healthcare or mental health is simple but powerful. “Lead with empathy and never underestimate the power of listening. Working with older people requires patience, compassion, and a real commitment to person centred care. Even the smallest actions can have a big impact.”
🙏 We thank Chet for all his work and congratulate him on his nomination!
