Starting toilet training? 🚽

Every child is different, but most toddlers are ready to start toilet training between 18 months and 3 years, when they begin to recognise their body’s signals and show interest in learning.

It’s best to avoid starting toilet training during big changes or stressful times, like welcoming a new baby or moving house.

If your child isn’t ready, that’s okay 💗

If they become upset, resistant or regress, try not to force it. Stay calm, reassure them and try again another time. Going back into nappies for a little while is completely normal.

You’re not failing, and neither are they. Toilet training works best when your child is developmentally ready and feels supported.

Babies communicate long before they can use words.

For example, your baby might:
• smile, look at you or reach out when they want to interact
• look away, yawn or rub their face when they are becoming tired
• fuss or cry when they feel overwhelmed and need help to settle.

By watching your baby closely and following their lead, you can respond to their needs earlier and help them feel calm and supported.

One of the biggest questions we get is, do you recommend the Cry It Out Method (CIO)?

In short? No.

We fully support you RESPONDING to your baby’s needs as you learn to identify why your baby is crying and how to respond appropriately. This may include picking your baby up, singing, rocking or having a cuddle. Your baby may prefer white noise, being patted, given a feed, or playing, and trying to settle again at a later time.

We’d love to help you navigate your baby’s needs for sleeping support.
