HLT21020 - Certificate II in Medical Service First Response (Recreational and Outdoor)
This qualification reflects the role of first medical response workers or volunteers who provide initial care to patients in outdoor, recreational, and remote environments. This program has been specifically designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver basic first aid in outdoor and recreational scenarios, encompassing a wide range of conditions and injuries. Through a practical, hands-on approach, students will learn how to improve patient outcomes in environments where traditional medical support may not be immediately available.
The program is tailored for individuals with backgrounds in activities such as scouting, sports training, remote adventure guiding, and wilderness first response. 65-year-old Roussel was visiting from Seychelles and shopping with his son at Northland Shopping Centre last month, when he suffered a cardiac arrest, collapsing to the ground suddenly.
Quick-thinking bystanders raised the alarm, and Northland security and police who happened to be on foot patrol just a few metres away arrived within seconds.
An off-duty nurse and First Constable Daphne Turney immediately commenced CPR with security officers Muhammad and Matt later stepping in before a defibrillator delivered three lifesaving shocks
Fire Rescue Victoria and Ambulance Victoria crews arrived soon after, taking over Roussel’s care and he was then taken to hospital where he has since had a pacemaker fitted, and is now on the path to recovery.
Before leaving to return home, we got to reunite with Rouusel and his son, alongside Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria, who help us provide the best care we can to all Victorians.
Well done to everyone involved. 👏 👏
Did you know when a person in cardiac arrest receives CPR from a bystander and a shock from an AED prior to paramedics arriving, their chance of survival more than doubles?
Lucky for Roussel, bystanders quickly jumped in and are the reason he's alive today.
Our message is simple:
📱 Call - Call Triple Zero (000).
🙌 Push - Start compressions.
⚡ Shock - Use a nearby AED to shock the patient.
You never know when you might need to use these lifesaving three steps.
