We’re developing something exciting for 2026, a new parent course designed especially for families of toddlers.

This program focuses on the foundations that matter most in the early years, connection, play, regulation, and communication.

It’s built from evidence-based strategies we use every day in therapy, designed to empower parents to support communication through real-life routines and interactions.

We can’t wait to share more soon as this project takes shape.

Recently, our leadership team met with an industry leader in creative project development and as a result, something pretty spectacular is in the works for 2026.

We’re developing an innovative program designed especially for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) combining evidence-based practice with creativity.

We can’t wait to share more soon. Stay tuned as exciting things are coming for our SMART Spot families.

Our team is always learning.

Mary has been diving deep into Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) to strengthen assessment and therapy tools for children with motor planning differences.

Emma has been exploring Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) — understanding how language difficulties impact learning and building evidence-based strategies to support the diagnostic process.

Grace is about to commence training in Ross Greene’s Collaborative & Proactive Solutions approach, focusing on helping children through connection, collaboration, and problem-solving.

We’re proud to invest heavily in ongoing learning so every child receives the highest quality, research-backed care.

My child’s speech isn’t clear. Should I wait and see, or get an assessment?”

💭Answer:

It’s common to wonder if unclear speech will “just sort itself out” as your child gets older. While some children do catch up naturally, others may benefit from early support to help them develop clear, confident communication skills.

Speech clarity can be affected by many factors, from sound development and oral motor skills to hearing, attention, and sensory processing. A speech pathology assessment can help determine what’s typical for your child’s age and whether support would be helpful.

Why early assessment matters:
🚀Identifies whether your child’s speech development is on track
✨️Highlights strengths and areas where support might be needed
➡️Gives you strategies to use at home right away
👉🏼Can prevent frustration and boost your child’s confidence

💡Tip:💡 If you or others regularly have trouble understanding your child, or if they’re getting frustrated when trying to communicate, it’s a good idea to check in with a speech pathologist.

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Mary, our incredible Clinical Team Lead at SMART Spot. Over the past year, Mary has dedicated herself to intensively studying Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), deepening her expertise so she can better support children and families navigating this communication challenge.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), sometimes called dyspraxia, developmental verbal dyspraxia (DVD), or speech apraxia, is a rare communication difference that affects how a child’s brain plans and sequences the muscle movements needed for speech.

A child with CAS knows exactly what they want to communicate. The difference lies in the motor planning process, coordinating the movements of the tongue, lips, jaw, and palate to form words can take extra time and practice. This is not due to weakness or damage to the speech muscles, but rather the way the brain sends and organises the movement messages.

Some characteristics that may be seen in children with CAS include:
👉🏼Finding some sounds or sound sequences harder to produce
👉🏼Making different speech patterns when saying the same word
👉🏼Unique intonation patterns, such as speaking in a monotone or placing equal stress on each syllable
👉🏼Slower speech pace, with more pauses between words
👉🏼Visible searching movements of the lips or tongue when speaking
👉🏼Having fewer spoken words at certain developmental stages

There’s no single cause for CAS, though research suggests that genetic factors may be involved.

Mary is deeply committed to supporting children with CAS and their families. She values this work because:
👉🏼She sees the determination and perseverance children show in their efforts to communicate.
👉🏼She witnesses the meaningful progress that can be achieved through targeted, evidence-based therapy.
👉🏼She enjoys equipping families with practical tools and strategies they can use in everyday life.

“There’s something incredibly special about hearing a child say a clear word for the first time, or watching their confidence grow as they begin to be understood.” – Mary
