We must always TRUST ourselves, RESPECT ourselves and be KIND & AFFECTIONATE to ourselves!

I speak to many parents who spend much of their energy on caring for everyone around them, but don't see themselves as worthy of the same respect and kindness. When we talk to ourselves in the same way we might talk to a friend, our whole perspective can shift....

Taking care of ourselves is crucial in being able to keep taking care of our families and loved ones. It's like the plane emergency analogy - you need to put your own oxygen mask on first before you can help anyone around you.

It is also great modelling when children see us love ourselves for who we are πŸ’œ

How will you be kind to yourself today?

We've just finished week 3 of the new school year and many children will still be getting settled in to the routine of new teachers, new classrooms and new schools! They will be starting to make friends, understand the expectations of them and, just maybe, they've even learnt something new and exciting!

There is a LOT for children to navigate when it comes to school and sometimes, we forget just how much they have to "hold it together" for the hours they are at school - and sometimes, they just can't. Or, they come home and fall apart, because they have been holding everything together at school.

While this is very typical of many children, some kids are 'holding in' so much that the mere thought of going to school becomes unbearable. School-related stress and anxiety can be a massive issue for some kids and can sometimes lead to "behavioural concerns" at school, such as meltdowns and hurting others, as well as school-refusal.

If you are concerned about how your child is coping at school and you would like to learn more, feel free to send us a message, or call one of our experienced therapists for a free phone consultation.

And finally, know that you are not alone in this! It can be a stressful time for parents and carers as well πŸ’œ

Some more of our favourite friends from the play room!

Teddy (aka Ted, Big Ted, Fred, Bob, or any other name that suits at the time!) and our beautiful squeaking, feathered puppet friend both come alive in the play room.

The puppets and soft toys are utilised in a lot of different ways; they can be friends or foes in role plays, or just some nice soft padding for rough play and physical regulation. They are often used as a secondary 'voice' for the child, a way the child can 'talk' about their experiences at a safe distance.

And of course, the two other 'big kids' who play a vital role in the play room - Lesley and Lisa, our therapists! The playful and compassionate environment we provide supports children to explore their inner world in the safety of the play room.

Another favourite for many, children and adults alike - the sand tray!

There are so many ways children can use the sand tray, from using it as a tactile emotion regulation tool, to using the space to tell their story and explore their experiences and feelings.

Children become immersed in the world they create in the sand tray, and it is an incredibly powerful experience to have that world seen and validated.

I have so many favourite toys in the play room - but if I really have to choose, it's the doll's house!

The house itself as well as the people, pets, furniture and accessories are instantly recognisable and can quickly be engaged with for children to explore their experiences in either a literal or metaphorical manner.

Children can play out anything from their regular routines and family interactions, to an exploration of 'wish fulfilment' if things were different in their lives, to retelling of a traumatic memory.

I also find it fascinating now to watch my own daughter's play in her dolls house and how much she 'talks' about her experiences through her play - there is magic in play and I am always in awe of just how powerful play can be, in a safe and supportive environment.

Play is not only the most natural way for children to learn, it is also the most accessible, because all children play.

Play is also how children 'practice' their skills, try out new ones and understand the world around them.

So, let them PLAY!

Unstructured play is one of the best activities we can 'organise' for our kids, especially as we get closer to the start of the school year.

Hands up if you've heard this more than once in the last few weeks..... πŸ™Œ

School holidays can sometimes be quite stressful for children, as they can flounder in the lack of routine, but also quickly become overstimulated by the amount of new and different activities/outings.

It is a fine line to balance and of course can differ depending on the child or the day!

So keep in mind that, "I'm bored!" can mean a lot of different things and may actually give you some insight into the emotional state of your child. They may just need some downtime or some connection to you - not necessarily another new and exciting activity.

And remember, opportunities for free/unstructured play is also very important for your child's development, learning and emotional wellbeing πŸ’œ
