Our Story

A number of Connect staff and families have long held the vision of creating a warm and welcoming space where grown-ups and children can form friendships, have fun, learn or teach new skills and just “be” and where parents can be supported to help their children thrive. A small group began meeting in early 2009 to think about where and how this could happen.

In September 2013, the Connect Community Based Family Support team moved into Heatherbrae, a gracious heritage listed house in Lawson. The Possum Toy Library, and the YAWN Program are based in Heatherbrae. The Child and Family Nurse clinic is held at Heatherbrae every Thursday 9.30-12.30. Ring Springwood Community Health on 47510100 to make an appointment. We encourage families to let us know what activities and resources would be useful and we will be working with local services to complement the many wonderful and varied activities and resources they already offer.

YAWN (You Ask We Nurture) is a unique volunteer home visiting service offering tired parents practical help and companionship. Each volunteer visits a family with a baby up to one year old in their own home for two hours once a week. YAWN volunteers are trained and supported to partner with families with babies and young children to enable parents to get some rest. During home visits volunteers may hold the baby, play with older siblings or just make a cup of tea and listen – whatever is useful. The service is offered to families for six months and the role of the volunteer is not to offer advice, but rather to support parents in their desire to parent well. Heatherbrae is currently open for informal play and chat: Monday 9.30am - 4.00pm Tuesday 9.30am - 4.00pm Wednesday 9.30 am - 4.00pm Thursday 9.30am - 4.00pm Friday 9.30am-1pm
