🔊 Helen’s Favourite Way to Boost Early Play & Engagement 🐾📚

One of my go-to recommendations for little ones is using sound books — especially when paired with mini animal figurines for interactive play!

Here’s why I love this combo in OT sessions:
🎵 Sound books capture attention and help with auditory processing and engagement
🦁 Pairing with animal toys encourages matching, pretend play, and storytelling
💬 Supports early language skills like naming, turn-taking, and following directions
🖐️ Promotes fine motor skills through pointing, pressing buttons and manipulating toys
🐣 A fun way to build cause-and-effect understanding and early imaginative play

It’s a simple setup, but packed with rich opportunities for communication, regulation and joyful connection 💛

🌈 Team Toy Spotlight: Twister! 🌈

Helen T, our Occupational Therapist, loves using Twister in therapy sessions!

She likes using Twister to support a range of skills in children, including:

🤸‍♀️ Gross motor skills – balance, coordination, and strength
↔️ Bilateral integration – using both sides of the body together
🧩 Motor planning – figuring out how to get to the next spot
🔄 Turn-taking – supporting play skills
💪 Proprioception – can support regulation through weight-bearing and body work

It’s a fun way to get kids moving, learning, and engaging all at once!

✨ Susan’s Book Recommendation for Imaginative Play & Language Skills! ✨

One of my favourite books to use in speech therapy is You Choose Fairy Tale by Nick Sharratt & Pippa Goodhart — and it’s always a hit with kids!

This interactive book invites children to:

🌟 Use their imagination
🌟 Make choices about their story
🌟 Guide the adventure in different directions
🌟 Create a brand new story every time it’s read!

I love using You Choose Fairy Tale to:
💬 Build expressive language skills
💡 Encourage storytelling and sequencing
🎭 Explore imaginative play
🗣 Support decision making and early conversation skills

It’s such a fun, engaging and flexible resource that works beautifully with children of all ages and abilities — no two stories are ever the same!

✍️ Handwriting Practice Can Be Fun!

Does your child avoid handwriting tasks or struggle with letter formations?

Good news — learning to write doesn't have to be boring! 🎉

In our latest blog, we share fun, hands-on activities that boost letter formation using play, movement, and sensory exploration. From shaving cream writing to rainbow tracing, these activities help develop the motor and perceptual foundations children need to become confident writers, as well as supporting reluctant writers to engage in writing.

Perfect for home, these strategies combine fun and function, and set kids up for handwriting success.

Speechie Monique’s Favourite Toy: Magnetic Building Blocks!

These colourful little blocks are so much more than just a fun building activity — they’re a language goldmine at every age! 💬👶👧🧒

Here’s why Monique loves them in therapy:

🤝 Promotes collaborative play
Perfect for turn-taking, sharing, building together, and using “my turn / your turn” language in social interactions.

🎨 Encourages creativity and problem-solving
Whether it’s building a rocket or a zoo, kids use imagination and flexible thinking – which means more chances for expressive language!

💡 So many ways to support language across ages:

👶 Early Intervention (12–36 months)
– Model words like up, on, more, fall, build
– Use gestures and sound effects to support first words
– Encourage joint attention and turn-taking with simple towers

👧 Preschoolers (3–5 years)
– Expand play with early sentences: “I made a house!”, “Put the door on”
– Model describing words like tall, short, round, pointy
– Use pretend play themes (e.g., zoo, garage) to build storytelling

📚 School-aged kids (5+ years)
– Support sequencing (e.g., “First we made the base, then the roof”)
– Build narratives: “Tell me about your castle – who lives there?”
– Work on positional words and concepts: above, between, beside

What Makes a Group “Neuro-Affirming”?

🌱 At Inner West Paediatrics, we know that social interaction looks different for every child.

That’s why our group programs don’t focus on “fitting in” — they focus on feeling safe, supported, and seen.

🧠 A neuro-affirming approach means:
✨ All communication is valid
✨ Kids can say no or ask for a break
✨ Strengths are celebrated
✨ Connection comes first
✨ Teaching and celebrating autonomy
✨ Advocating for self and sensory supports

📚 School’s out, but the day isn’t over for kids (or parents!).
Ever noticed how tricky homework, chores, or even dinner chats can be right after school? That’s because kids often need to regulate before they can participate or learn.

Identifying simple after-school calming routines can make all the difference:
A snack and a cuddle 🍎🤗
Quiet play, music, or drawing 🎶✏️
Movement - a bike ride or trampoline bounce 🚲🦘

Identifying what is calming for your child or young person is key 💕

Want more ideas to support regulation? Our team at Inner West Paediatrics is here to help.

🧱 Philippa’s Book Recommendation for Fun & Functional Speech Therapy! 🧱

Lego City Busy World Book is one of my absolute favourites to use in therapy — because honestly, who doesn’t love Lego?!

This book is guaranteed to get little ones talking, reading and engaged. It’s such a versatile resource for targeting a range of speech and language goals, including:

🎯 Speech sounds — practising target words in a fun, motivating way
🎯 Language skills — describing, labelling, asking & answering questions
🎯 Narrative skills — creating stories, sequencing events & building ideas

It works beautifully at both the single word level and with longer sentences — and the best part? It’s the perfect springboard straight into Lego play afterwards!

Books + Play = Speechie Win! 🙌

Why Oral Motor Skills Matter for Feeding 👄

Chewing, biting, sucking, and swallowing all rely on strong oral motor skills — but for some kids, these don’t come naturally or easily.

Feeding therapy helps with:
💪 Jaw strength and lip closure
👅 Tongue control and movements for chewing
🥄 Managing different food textures

Improving these foundational skills can make mealtimes safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable for your child.
