📚 Team Book Recommendation 📚

Georgia, our Occupational Therapist, has a wonderful book recommendation for kiddos facing fears or aversions to going to the toilet. 💩

"It Hurts When I P**p" by Howard Bennett is a great read to help children feel validated and less alone in their experiences with toilet training. Georgia says:

"I love to recommend this book to families and read it with kids who are experiencing fears or aversions to doing a poo and sitting on the toilet. It’s so reassuring for children when they realise they’re not the only ones going through it. It helps them understand that it’s okay to feel nervous and encourages them to try again."

🎉 Toileting Tip: Make Toileting Fun and Positive!

Kids learn best through play—so make the bathroom a positive space:
🐻 Act it out with dolls or teddies (e.g., “Teddy needs to do a wee!”)
🎵 Sing songs together on the toilet (try The Wiggles’ Toilet Song!)
🫧 Use bubbles or a special toy to keep things relaxed

When toileting is enjoyable and pressure-free, kids are more likely to want to join in!

🌟 Book Spotlight: Zoya – The Stuttering Star 🌟

Written by teen author Sathvega Somasundaram, Zoya: The Stuttering Star is a heartwarming children’s book that transforms stuttering into a superpower! ✨

Inspired by the author’s own experiences, it follows Zoya — a brave girl who learns to embrace her unique voice, stand up to bullies, and shine brightly by showing that differences can be magical.

Why we love it:
💬 A positive and affirming representation of stuttering
🌈 Empowers children to celebrate what makes them unique
🤝 Encourages self-acceptance, resilience, and kindness
📚 An inspiring read for children who stutter and for anyone learning about embracing differences

This book is a wonderful reminder that our voices — in all their forms — are powerful and worth celebrating! 💛

Interest-Based = Connection That Is Natural

🎮🧱🎭 Whether your child loves Minecraft, building with Lego, or creative storytelling — we design interest-based groups to make social connection be authentic and natural.

Our neuro-affirming approach means children can:
💛 Join in their own way
💛 Say no or take breaks - building their self-advocacy
💛 Connect through shared joy

🤝 We also offer social pairings for kids who do best in smaller settings.

Tongue Tie? You’re Not Alone. 💛👅

Just found out your child has a tongue tie and are feeling unsure what to do next?

We get it - it can be overwhelming. But the good news is: with the right support, many children go on to speak clearly and eat well.

A tongue tie (ankyloglossia) means the small band under the tongue is shorter or tighter than usual, affecting movement. Not all ties need treatment - what matters is how it’s affecting your child.

💬 Our speech pathologists can assess your child’s feeding, speech, and oral motor skills, and help guide the next steps.

📚 Team Book Recommendation 📚

Ashleigh, our Speech Pathologist, has a fantastic book for supporting language development!

"Too Tall to Twirl" is a delightful children’s book that’s perfect for working on language skills. Ashleigh shares:

"I love the children's book 'Too Tall to Twirl.' It's really helpful when supporting children with their language because it helps me target action words, like 'twirl' and 'dance,' the correct tense ('The antelope twirled and flipped'), and concepts such as 'tall' and 'small.' It also encourages children to describe things in fun and creative ways, making learning language even more enjoyable!"

🤝 Did you know we offer social pairings that can:
- offer opportunities to develop social interactions
- build confidence in smaller settings
- help children ease into group therapy

We thoughtfully match kids with similar interests and goals (think: Minecraft, animals, art, or whatever interests your kiddo 🐶🎨🎮) to support communication, friendship and fun.

🐷 Sofia’s Top Pick: Farm Animals Soft Felt Play Book 🧵📚

I love using the Farm Animals Soft Felt Play book in speech therapy sessions — it’s interactive, hands-on, and makes learning language feel like play!

Here’s why it’s my current favourite:
🎵 Perfect for modelling early sounds like animal noises in a fun and playful way
💬 Supports key early language concepts including:
- Core words: “more,” “turn,” “go”
- Prepositions: “on,” “next to,” “above”
🎭 Encourages interactive storytelling and imaginative play
🤝 Promotes turn-taking, requesting, and shared attention
🖐️ Combines language learning with fine motor skill development

Felt books like this one create beautiful opportunities for connection while building essential communication skills — and kids love it!🐮
