Let me introduce you to the aboriginal word, dadirri, that informed part of our last retreat day.

Aboriginal writer and senior elder Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann describes deep listening as follows:

"Dadirri is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri recognises the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us. This is the gift that Australia is thirsting for. It is something like what you call 'contemplation'.

"When I experience dadirri, I am made whole again. I can sit on the riverbank or walk through the trees; even if someone close to me has passed away, I can find my peace in this silent awareness. There is no need of words. A big part of dadirri is listening."

"My people are not threatened by silence. They are completely at home in it. They have lived for thousands of years with Nature's quietness. My people today, recognise and experience in this quietness, the great Life-Giving Spirit, the Father of us all."

Dadirri also means awareness of where you've come from, why you are here, where are you going now and where you belong. It can be used as a tool to quieten the mind as it teaches about "the quiet stillness and the waiting," according to Ungunmerr-Baumann.

"Our Aboriginal culture has taught us to be still and to wait. We do not try to hurry things up. We let them follow their natural course – like the seasons."

As I reflected to the group on the weekend, the mind has two aspects. The busy 'thinking' mind on the one hand, and the still quite 'awareness' on the other. And this dadirri is such a beautiful description of the still part of the mind. All of us have access to it, if only we can learn to quieten the active, busy part of mind.

Meditation has been a traditional way in many cultures for people to experience this deep spiritual peace. So has going on retreat, spending time in nature and long distance running!

How fortunate we are to have this teaching of dadirri from the aboriginal culture.

What do you do to quieten your mind?

I've just spent the weekend up the coast with old friends. We love the beach, and we love beach combing. I slipped out early this morning while everyone was sleeping and had this golden hour to myself. For any Tasmanians reading you will appreciate it was made even more special as:

a) the sun was shining, and

b) there was no wind, hail or snow

Heavenlyl!!! πŸ’™πŸ˜€πŸ™

Welcome to Mountain Mindfulness

Yoga & mindfulness are tools that help to get us out of our heads, and back into our hearts and bodies. They allow us to drop the constant β€˜doing’ and take some time to simply β€˜be’. Mindfulness research shows that we have around 60,000 thoughts a day, and that 90% of them we also had yesterday and the day before! Understanding the nature of the mind, and learning techniques to manage it, helps us live a more happy and balanced life.

Music: Coming together to sing, chant, or move with the peace dances, creates a positive vibration on every level - physical, mental and emotional. Melodic repetition and musical patterns are calming for the mind. Being in a group creates community and connection. Learning something new creates new neural pathways in the brain and is so good for your mental health.

About Melissa Howden (Sangita): Melissa’s background is in education as a music teacher working in schools in both Tasmania & London. Following a major sea change triggered by a health crisis in 2013, she found herself living in a yoga ashram in NSW and studying at the Gawler Cancer Foundation in Victoria. During this time Melissa came to understand the enormous part the mind plays in healing and in determining the quality of one’s whole life. This is why she now loves to share the path of yoga and mindfulness, as well as music, as ways to enhance both physical and mental wellbeing and to create a more personally meaningful life.
