Shoulder pain is often misunderstood. Shoulders are notoriously difficult to assess and treat, largely due to the fact that there are so many tendons, ligaments, joints and fat pads (bursae), in close proximity. These structures are typically really bad at fixing themselves, largely due to the fact that they have a really poor blood supply. BUT THERE IS HOPE.
A combination of dry needling, therapeutic ultrasound, electrotherapy and soft tissue therapy may be really, really effective at increasing the blood supply, and therefore the healing rate in these injured structures.
Shoulder treatment of course starts with a thorough assessment to determine the cause of the pain. Usually a few simple "in office" tests are enough to determine the cause of the pain, but in some cases a diagnostic ultrasound scan, or extreme cases, an MRI may be needed to better assess the exact cause of the pain.
If you are suffering from shoulder pain that is waking you up at night and/or preventing you from performing simple tasks like putting on a shirt, hanging up the washing, or reaching for something on the top shelf, it may be a good time to have your condition assessed by a practitioner that you trust and that has experience in the assessment and treatment of shoulder injuries.
