I love a beautiful garden...all the diffrent shades of green with beautiful natural plants and bright colours. It's a treat for every sense. But unlike most of my MGA colleagues, I have no gardening skills.
Recently a friend who is an avid gardener came to my home. I was pointing out something in my garden and proudly saying how beautiful it was even if I had no idea where it came from!! She laughed kindly and said "that's because it's a w**d". It took me a while to accept it as I pointed out its beauty and what it added to my garden.
Today as I accepted it was a w**d and went about removing it from my garden,I couldn't help draw the analogy with people. It's not so easy to identify those who will not be healthy to our lives. Like the w**ds they often appear Beautiful and they carry things which add to our lives. It's not until they are more entrenched in our lives does the unhealthy and sometimes toxic and highly damaging come out.
In my work with people coming out of abusive or damaging relationships, I am often struck by what warm, kind, open, caring and amazing people they are. I love the journey of helping them to not only identify what they have been through, recover and strengthen but to most importantly shine, see their value and live their best lives.
There are many quiet hero's in my Counselling rooms and I honor them today .
