Who’s excited for the AFL Grand Final tomorrow? We sure are!

Footy has a way of bringing people together — but when betting odds pop up all over your screen, it can take the fun out of the game.

Sean, Each’s Community Engagement Officer for Gambler’s Help, sees firsthand how social betting can cause harm when it’s not kept in check.

Ahead of the clash between the Geelong Cats and Brisbane Lions, Sean has a quick tip to help you enjoy the day without distractions:

👉 Open the AFL app
👉 Go to Settings
👉 Tap ‘Hide betting odds’

Looking for other ways to take back control? Sean also recommends signing up for BetStop, a free national service that blocks betting ads in Australia.

The Gambling Helpline also provides free, confidential, 24/7 crisis support to those experiencing gambling-related problems: 1800 858 858

Gambling harm is rising across Australia — but help is within reach.

With pokies, sports betting, and online games everywhere, it’s no surprise losses hit a record $31 billion recently.

Young people, especially men aged 18–25, are most at risk. Between footy finals season, spring racing carnival promotions, and constant “bonus bets” and “cash back” offers, what starts as fun can quickly spiral.

If you or someone you know is impacted by gambling, you’re not alone. Gambling harm can happen to anyone – especially when betting and gaming are part of everyday life. If you’re struggling there is free, confidential, and judgement-free support available.

✨ We’re proud to see Kim, one of our dedicated nurses from our Virtual Women’s Health Clinic, featured by the Victorian Department of Health.

Kim is driven to help women put their health first — breaking down barriers when access to care is limited.

Find out more about our Virtual Women’s Health Clinic: https://www.each.com.au/services/virtual-womens-health-clinic

Too often, women put themselves last, often caring for everyone else before their own health and wellbeing. Kim, a nurse at the virtual women’s health clinic, reminds us to pause, reflect, and put yourself first.

For Kim, supporting women to make that shift towards putting themselves first, is what drives her.

“Women’s bodies go through incredible changes… being part of that journey with patients is such a privilege.”

She’s seen how hard it can be for women in regional Victoria to wait months or travel hours just to be heard.

"To help change that restores people’s dignity and equity. It’s not just nursing – it’s advocacy, connection, and change."

And sometimes, the most powerful thing she can do is simply listen.

"When patients call and they’re upset, crying, and feeling dismissed by their regular doctor, I take the time to really listen. Together, we make a plan that helps them feel supported, empowered, and no longer alone."

Advocating for women’s health is more than raising awareness. It’s about honouring the resilience of women, and the strength that comes from knowledge, care, and compassion.

As Kim says:
"Knowledge is power. I want every woman to feel confident, informed, and cared for."

Prescriptions for anxiety and sleeping meds in Australia have decreased over the past decade, but the harm – including accidental overdose deaths – has grown.

Anxiety and sleeping pills contributed to 269 overdose deaths in Victoria in 2024 - nearly half of all overdose deaths. Whilst prescription monitoring may have helped curb ‘doctor shopping’, it’s also led to people sourcing meds from people that aren’t their doctor.

We’re worried about the rise of ‘novel pharmaceuticals’: new or emerging drugs designed to mimic the effects of existing medications, but with different chemical structures.

Recent data from the Victorian Coroner’s Court shows that in overdose deaths from novel drugs in 2024, novel anxiety and sleep meds – benzodiazepines – caused 73% of those deaths.

Some novel pharmaceuticals are sold as counterfeit versions of familiar medicines, like Xanax or Va**um; making them especially dangerous for people who think they are taking a regulated product.

We support International Overdose Awareness Day on 31 August, and the call for a world free from overdose. Overdose from anxiety and sleep medications can and must be prevented.

Each’s Reconnexion service has helped Victorians for nearly 40 years to end their dependence on these medications, and this support is needed now more than ever.

If you or someone you know needs help with anxiety and sleeping pills, support is available. Contact our Reconnexion service on 1300 003 224 or visit https://www.each.com.au/services/reconnexion

Did you know that Australia is on track to becoming the first country to eliminate cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer is preventable due to a simple screening test. Women and people with a cervix aged 25-74 should have a cervical screening test every 5 years.

Raising awareness about cervical screening can prevent cancer. Our Enliven service, with the Cancer Council and Monash Health’s South East Public Health Unit , have developed easy to understand information about cervical screening in English, Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi and Punjabi so you know your options.

Together we can raise awareness, increase screening rates in and most importantly —save lives. ❤️
