At the age of 30, Gunilla fell off a horse which resulted in a severe spinal cord injury that would forever impact her life. Admittedly, Gunilla was already familiar with living with a disability, having been born with dysmelia and lacking her left forearm and hand since birth. Throughout the 1980s, she excelled as an elite alpine downhill skier, despite having only one arm, earning several gold medals in the Paralympics.
Gunilla was introduced to LoFric catheters immediately after the accident and has relied on them ever since. "On occasion, I've tried catheters from competing brands on recommendations, but I've always come back to LoFric".
Gunilla works as the Director of the SCI Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is also a guest lecturer for Wellspect and has been involved in the development of several products, including LoFric Hydro-Kit.
"I like the all-in-one concept and having as few steps as possible to handle, considering I only have one hand. One time I had to give a lecture at Lund's SCI Unit, a 3.5-hour drive. I was able to drive there and back all by myself thanks to LoFric's all-in-one catheter that allowed me to stop and catheterise in nature when needed. It was a huge sense of freedom".
Gunilla cycles as much as possible. She also kayaks and sails in the summer, and goes tobogganing in the winter. Gunilla emphasises "It's very important for me to get out into nature- and the sea. Having two dogs, including a retired service dog, has contributed to my active outdoor life".
