I thought I was just “too sensitive.”
Too distracted. Too intense.
Too… much.

But then I learned I was Autistic/ADHD, and suddenly, it all made sense.

From executive dysfunction to special interests, these weren’t flaws, they were signs. Of how my brain actually works.

💛 If this hits home, you’re not alone.

Double tap if you’ve ever had an “ohhh… it’s not just me” moment, and follow for more lived-experience truths.

But you don’t LOOK Autistic…' 👀

Let’s unpack that.

Autism doesn’t have a look.
It’s not a vibe, an outfit, or a stereotype.

Many of us have spent our whole lives masking to avoid drawing attention to ourselves. Some of us didn't get that option. Both experiences (and all the ones in between) are valid and deserve their own space.

So yes, I’m Autistic.
No, I don’t need to prove it to you.
And yes, this kind of ‘compliment’ is actually invalidating.

Let’s normalise all ways of being Autistic. Let's actually listen to and validate people.

Let's be a little more *flexible* in our thinking.

Autistic/ADHD burnout isn’t just “feeling tired.”
It’s a full-body shutdown.
The kind where even rest feels hard.

For me, it looked like:
🚫 Struggling to do everyday tasks
💭 Feeling flat, numb, or way too much
🎯 Losing interest in things I normally love
😷 Masking harder… until I physically couldn’t anymore

Burnout doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means your nervous system is overloaded, and it’s asking for support.

Inside Building Your Neurodivergent Identity, we unpack what burnout really looks like, and how to rebuild from it in a way that actually honours your needs.

✨ Hit save if you’ve been there too, and want a way forward that isn’t about “pushing through.”

Follow for more support that gets it.

You smiled. You nodded. You made eye contact. You passed for ‘fine.’

But now? You’re on the couch in silence. Can’t move. Can’t think. Just… empty.

That’s the social hangover.

It’s what can happen when you’ve spent hours (or days or years) hiding who you are to feel safe.

And even when it’s ‘just a short meeting’ or ‘a quick catch-up’, it takes a toll.

You don’t need to justify your recovery time. It’s valid. And necessary.

🟡 Let’s unlearn the idea that rest needs to be earned.

For Autistic and ADHD folk, emotions can be intense. A small frustration can feel huge, and unexpected changes can lead to meltdowns or shutdowns.

This isn’t about being “too sensitive”, it’s about having a smaller window of tolerance for stressors (often because that window is already being used to manage all of the other things that make life tricky for Autistic/ADHD folk)..

How can we help?
🌿 Identify triggers - Sensory overwhelm, demands, social pressure.
💡 Find regulation tools - Stimming, movement, deep pressure, interests.
💛 Offer co-regulation - Support without dismissing their emotions.

What’s one thing that helps you or your child regulate big feelings? Let’s share in

Meltdowns aren’t tantrums. They’re nervous system overload.

They’re not about control or manipulation, they’re about survival.

Here’s what helps me (and others I’ve supported):
🌧️ A dark, quiet space
🧺 Soft textures or pressure (like blankets)
🎧 Noise-cancelling headphones
🚫 No questions or talking unless I initiate
🫶 Validation - not advice

What helps you regulate after a meltdown? Let’s build a list for our community.

Your needs aren’t ‘too much.’ They’re important.

If you’ve been told you’re too lazy, much, too sensitive, too scattered, maybe you were just misunderstood.

Being Autistic/ADHDer isn’t a character flaw.

It’s a whole new way of being, and there’s strength in that.

Sensory experiences can be draining when they don’t align with what your brain and body need.

A sensory-friendly world means offering options, not forcing people to “get used to it.”

💬 What’s one sensory-friendly adjustment that makes a difference for you?
