Sepsis is when your body has an extreme, life-threatening response to an infection. Any kind of infection, including influenza (flu), can cause sepsis. Flu activity is high right now and the risk of sepsis is highest during the peak of the flu season.
People with sepsis say they feel very sick (the worst they have ever felt) and get sick very quickly.

Symptoms can include:
- difficulty breathing
- confusion
- low or no urine
- fever or chills
- rapid heart rate
- a new rash or blue, grey, pale or blotchy skin.

If you feel unwell or are concerned, visit your doctor or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222, even if you have already seen a doctor.

If you are very sick, go to a hospital emergency department or call Triple Zero (000).
Don’t be afraid to ask ‘could it be sepsis?’

It's Speech Pathology Week, so we are celebrating our wonderful speech pathologists, their patients and working together to address any challenges.

This is Fortunato's story:

"I am Fortunato, I'm 72 years old and was admitted to Liverpool Hospital in July 2025, thinking I had only a nasty flu. But, it was more sinister than that. After laboratory checks and a series of tests, it was found that I had a big infection affecting my throat and airways, causing dysphagia.

The speech pathologists were involved in diagnosing the problem before the operation, where a camera was inserted through my nose down to my throat to find out if my swallowing was ok. The process was painful but necessary to my survival. The operation helped speed up the process of clearing the infection. After the tests conducted by the speech pathologists and almost four weeks stay in the hospital without foods, I finally went to X-ray to confirm that I can swallow safely and I am now making a slow recovery.

The speech pathologists were a vital link for a case like me, helping cure the dysphagia that I have in coordination with the surgeons. Happy Speech Pathology Week to all speech pathologists!"

Our Story

Liverpool Hospital is one of the biggest and busiest Hospital's in New South Wales. It provides a comprehensive range of clinical services, including medical surgical, intensive care, emergency medicine, oncology, mental health nuclear medicine, women's health and newborn care. Liverpool Hospital provides teaching and clinical placements for health professionals from a number of Universities and has strategic partnerships with the Univesity of New South Wales and University of Western Sydney.

It is an exciting time for the local community with the NSW Government investing $740 million for the redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital.

An additional $50 million has been committed for a new multi-storey car park which will replace the smaller existing multi-storey car park on the site, providing 500 additional spaces across campus.

As one of the state’s biggest infrastructure projects, the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct will boost the local economy and showcase Liverpool Hospital to the world as a hub for innovation and medical research.
