We are delighted to mark the opening of the Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building – Macarthur, a $55 million state-of-the-art facility that will be home to the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research – Macarthur.

This purpose-built research hub, located on the grounds of Campbelltown Hospital, is designed to tackle some of the most pressing health challenges in the community: diabetes, child health and wellbeing, mental health, addiction medicine and Indigenous health.

By bringing together world-class researchers and clinicians this facility will:

✅ Drive innovation in healthcare with a strong focus on South Western Sydney

✅ Improve access to clinical research for the local community

✅ Deliver research of national significance that can be scaled for global impact

The Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building is more than bricks and mortar - it is a commitment to health equity, collaboration, and transformative care for South Western Sydney's 1.2 million residents, and provides the opportunity for Ingham Institute's expansion beyond our existing facilities in Liverpool.

Ingham Institute CEO Simone Proft and Executive Director for Research Partnerships Katie Quinn Gilbert led NSW Premier the Hon. Chris Minns MP, local members Greg Warren MP (Campbelltown) and Sally Quinall MP (Camden) and senior representatives of the local community and partner institutions on a tour, introducing them to some of the researchers who will soon move into the new facility as part of our flagship research programs focusing on Diabetes and on Child Health and Wellbeing. We were also represented by our Directors Jim Marsden OAM and Mark Perich.

The incredible generosity of the late Lang Walker AO and the Walker family was pivotal to the creation of the new facility and is a shining example of the transformational power of philanthropy. A huge thank you to the Walkers and also to our partners: Western Sydney University, South Western Sydney Local Health District, UNSW, and Walker Corporation for coming together to make this vision a reality.

We are proud to expand Ingham Institute’s mission to improve health outcomes for the people of South Western Sydney. Here’s to a future of groundbreaking research and better health for all!

We were delighted to see the achievements of so many Ingham Institute colleagues, affiliates and partners recognised at the 2025 NSW Premier’s Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research:

The Liverpool Medical Oncology Clinical Trials Unit - a shared endeavour with our clinical partner South Western Sydney Local Health District - took the Outstanding Cancer Clinical Trials Unit Award for its work expanding high-quality cancer clinical trials and improving equitable access for the diverse communities of South Western Sydney.

Our affiliate Associate Professor Abhijit Pal took home the Improving Equitable Outcomes Award for his work across many initiatives including improving understanding of barriers to research participation in under-represented communities; leading a pilot program utilising Arabic bilingual navigators which has demonstrated innovative learnings about cancer and research literacy; and participating in a project to ensure equity and diversity in the cohort of women recruited to the ALLCLEAR breast cancer research initiative.

And Eric Yeung, President of CanRevive Inc. and collaborator in the Australian Centre for Cancer Equity (a partnership between Ingham Institute, SWSLHD and the NSW Cancer Institute), was recognised for his longstanding work strengthening cancer support and culturally responsive care for Chinese-speaking communities through the Consumer Engagement in Cancer Research Award.

We congratulate all the winners and finalists for their endeavours and thank our friends at NSW Cancer Institute for organising a fun and incredibly inspiring event.

It was a proud moment last night as we celebrated the official launch of the Perich Centre for Robotics & Health Technology here at the Ingham Institute – a flagship hub dedicated to advancing health equity through innovation.

Described as an “automation imaginarium”, the Centre brings together world-class clinical research, teaching and advanced training in healthcare automation.

At the official opening, attended by members of the Perich family, Minister for Medical Research The Hon. David Harris MP, and Clinical Lead for the Centre, Dr Glen Schlaphoff, the vision was clear:
To ensure healthcare automation is ethical, inclusive and accessible for all and to deliver global impact, starting here in South Western Sydney.

Guided by the Perich family’s passion, Professor Les Bokey’s vision, and the leadership of Dr Glen Schlaphoff, the Centre is set to become a national and international leader in “tech-quity” – using technology to close health care gaps.

The next era of healthcare starts now.
