✨ 5 Simple Tips to Boost Your Child’s Communication Skills ✨
Building communication happens in your everyday moments. Here are some easy ways to help your child grow their speech and language:
1️⃣ Read together – Reading is one of the most powerful ways to support your child's communication skills. Even a few minutes a day makes a difference. Point to pictures, name what you see, and let your child turn the pages on his own. Books help build new words and spark conversations, and it also creates great moments between you and your child.
2️⃣ Talk out loud about what’s happening – Describe your actions and talk about what is happening around you to your child: “I’m pouring the juice. Now I’m cutting the apple.” This gives your child a model for how language works and helps them connect words with actions and understand their meaning.
3️⃣ Follow their interests – If your child loves cars, animals, or building blocks, use those as conversation starters or as tool to learn new language structures. Talking about what excites them makes learning new vocabulary natural and fun. If they like cars you can talk about colours, count the wheels or name different parts of the car. You can also use the car as a tool - use the car to drive on the mat and visiting different kinds of animals to practice different language structures.
4️⃣ Wait for their answers – After you ask a question, pause and give them extra time to think and react. Children need a few seconds to process and respond — your patience helps them build confidence.
5️⃣ Offer choices – Instead of yes/no questions, give options: “Do you want a banana or an apple?” This encourages your child to use words and gives them a sense of independence.
💛 Every small moment counts. By turning everyday routines into little conversations, you’re giving your child the strongest foundation for speech, language, and connection.
