Book a Heart Health Check with your GP today.
If you are 45 years and over, and don’t already have heart disease, you can see your GP for a Heart Health Check. Some people may be eligible earlier such as from 30 years for First Nations Peoples and 35 years for people living with diabetes.
Never miss a BEAT by booking a Heart Health Check. It's a 20-minute check up with your GP to assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years and discuss steps you can take to lower your risk.

International Men’s Health Week runs from 10th-16th June.

So let’s tackle men’s health! As a Clinical Social Worker, I have the privilege of working in an interdisciplinary health team. It’s normal for me to chat about topics like prostate and bowel health, however, I understand this can feel awkward or even intimidating for others.

Who knew bowels could be so temperamental? I know mine is and so is my fathers, and his fathers! Unfortunately, many of my male clients avoid bowel screening.

What about doctor visits? Men tend to treat them like speed dates, in and out before you can even finish your elevator pitch. But here’s the downside - delaying a chat with your GP could mean missing out on early detection and nobody wants to play catch-up with chronic conditions.

And then there’s mental health. Did you know 72% of us dodge the conversation about mental health? I know us Aussies are tough cookies, but that’s a heavy load to carry on your shoulders.

I have some homework for you. Let’s give some love to our most valuable players - the prostate, the bowel and our mental wellbeing. As a card-carrying member of the ‘I’ve got a family history’ crew, I say this both professionally and personally - these guys need some TLC.

As we celebrate International Men’s Health Week, let’s keep those screenings on the agenda and don’t hesitate to have that awkward conversation with your GP. After all, it’s your health we’re talking about and you’re worth more than a quick check up!

Written by Andrew Stinson, Social Worker and Specialist Support Coordinator from our NDIS & Chronic Disease team.
