In 1946, a young Czech runner named Emil Zátopek crossed the finish line in Oslo and quietly broke his country’s 5,000-meter record. No one outside Czechoslovakia paid much attention yet.

Two years later in London, he returned from a brutal 10,000-meter gold to grab silver in the 5,000. But it wasn’t just the medals people remembered it was his tortured expression, his fight, his refusal to back down.

By 1951, Emil wasn’t just winning. He was breaking everything. World records in the 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, even the 30,000 meters. And he didn’t do it with grace he did it with grit. His face twisted in pain, his style messy and chaotic. But always, he won.

Then came Helsinki, 1952.
Three events.
Three golds.
Three Olympic records.
And yes one of them was the marathon. A race he’d never run before. He asked the world-record holder midrace if the pace was okay. When told it was too slow, Emil smiled… and sped up. He crossed the line two minutes ahead of everyone.

By 1956, injuries slowed him down. But even from a hospital bed, he trained. He finished sixth in the Melbourne marathon, then stepped away for good.

Zátopek’s running style? Ugly. His breathing? Loud. His training? Brutal.
But his heart? Unmatched.
He trained in snow. He wore work boots. He shared everything he knew.

And through it all, he showed the world what happens when spirit outpaces style.

Alzheimer's disease, where damaged nerve cells result in cognitive decline and memory loss has a new exciting study looking into treatments without the side effects.

Researchers focused on gossypetin, flavanoid found in a hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa). Mice with Alzheimer's were given gossyptin for three months and their cognition were returned to normal. The researchers expect that gossypectin from hybiscus will contribute to a safe and affordable drug for Alzheimer's, but in the meantime, Hibiscus tea won't hurt!

Today, I want to write about something different: the profound connection between our diets and our bodies. My neighbors, enthusiastic organic gardeners, often share their produce with us. One time, they gifted me a big bag of turmeric, which I didn’t know how to use. I knew turmeric had health benefits but couldn’t recall why.

So here is why!

Turmeric, often called a “golden remedy,” is a vibrant herb known for its distinct yellow color. It adds brilliant hues and a warm, peppery flavor to Indian curry dishes. The root has orange flesh and an earthy scent, even stronger than ginger. Belonging to the ginger family, turmeric and ginger are frequently used together for their medicinal properties. Due to its numerous health benefits, turmeric has earned the nickname “the spice of life,” and research supports its advantages across various bodily systems.

So, what does the science say?

Curcumin, the most important active ingredient in turmeric, is estimated to offer around 150 therapeutic benefits. Lab and clinical studies demonstrate its effectiveness in preventing and treating numerous conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular issues, neurological disorders, metabolic diseases, skin ailments, and inflammation. Remarkably, curcumin is so effective as an anti-inflammatory that it rivals some prescription medications—without the side effects!

Turmeric has been found beneficial for inflammatory bowel diseases, joint pain, and arthritis-related swelling. Significant research has also focused on curcumin’s neuroprotective properties, showing promise in treating Alzheimer’s disease by preventing neurodegeneration.

Additionally, curcumin has been evaluated as an anticancer agent, with findings indicating it inhibits the growth of gastrointestinal and liver cancers, head and neck tumors, and even targets breast cancer cells.

Incorporating turmeric into your diet not only enhances flavor but can also provide a multitude of health benefits. Whether you use it fresh, dried, or in supplements, this powerful spice is definitely worth considering!

Understanding Dupuytren's Contracture
One of many conditions I see with my clients is Dupuytren's contracture. It is a hand condition that affects the connective tissue under the skin of the palm, leading to the thickening and shortening of the tissue. This can cause one or more fingers to bend towards the palm, making it difficult to fully extend them.
• Dupuytren's contracture has been referred to as “Viking disease” due to its higher prevalence among people of Scandinavian descent.
• The condition often starts with small nodules in the palm, which may progress to cords that pull fingers inward.
• While the exact cause is unknown, genetics, age, and certain health conditions (like diabetes) can increase the risk. It’s more common in people of Northern European descent.
• A healthcare professional can typically diagnose it through a physical exam, often using the “table top test” to assess finger extension.
• It is named after French surgeon Guillaume Dupuytren, who first described the condition in the 19th century, this condition has a long history, with mentions dating back to ancient texts.
• It affects about 3% of the population, with men more likely to develop it than women. The likelihood increases with age, particularly in those over 50.
• In addition to surgery and injections, emerging treatments like collagenase injections are showing promise in breaking down the thickened tissue with less invasive procedures.
Massage can provide some benefits for people with Dupuytren's contracture, but it’s not a definitive treatment, but it can
• Improve circulation - Gentle massage enhances blood flow to the affected area, potentially easing discomfort.
• Regularly massaging the hands and fingers might help maintain some range of motion and prevent stiffness.
• Massage can relieve tension in the surrounding muscles, which may help with overall hand function.

Aging is a complex, natural process, and research into it began in 1939 with findings that calorie restriction could extend lifespan in rodents. The concept of inflammaging emerged to describe the low-grade, chronic inflammation that accumulates with age and contributes to aging. This ongoing inflammation, coupled with immune system damage, plays a key role in aging.

Studies show that older men experience higher inflammation levels and a greater loss of naive T and B cells compared to older women, which may help explain gender differences in lifespan. Additionally, centenarians often exhibit stronger anti-inflammatory responses, highlighting the significant impact of inflammation and immune function on aging.
