🖤💛❤️ALL IN for Reconciliation❤️💛🖤

This National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and reflect on how we can all take meaningful action toward reconciliation.

At Connecting Dots for Kids, being “ALL IN” means:
✨️Listening and learning
✨️Creating culturally safe and inclusive spaces
✨️Valuing connection, storytelling and community
✨️Continuing to grow in understanding and respect

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June and includes two significant dates:
▪︎27 May, anniversary of the 1967 Referendum
▪︎3 June, Mabo Day

This year’s theme reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility, and that real change happens when we all take part.

Communication doesn’t happen in isolation

Before words can come, children need to feel safe, regulated, and connected.
That’s why Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy work so closely together. Supporting the body, attention, and regulation creates the foundation for communication to develop.

When we support the whole child, not just the words, that’s when we start to see real progress

So much of what we see as “behaviour” is actually communication.

When a child is having a hard time, it’s often because something feels hard, overwhelming, or uncomfortable in their world, not because they’re choosing to make things difficult.

When we start to look a little deeper and get curious about what might be going on underneath, our response can shift from reacting… to supporting.

That shift is where the real difference happens

Speech happens at home too
Therapy is just one piece of the puzzle.

The real progress happens in the everyday moments at home.
Practising little and often, during play, routines, and daily conversations, is what helps skills stick and grow.

Those small moments you create at home?
They matter more than you think

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day.💙

At Connecting Dots for Kids, we believe access is not an extra, it is essential. When we remove barriers, we open doors to communication, learning, and connection for every child.

Accessibility means:
• Creating environments where every child can participate
• Supporting diverse ways of communicating and learning
• Building a community where everyone belongs

Together, we can design a world that works for everyone.

POV: your “adult job” involves this much energy🔥✨️🎉

Because therapy doesn’t have to look serious to be seriously impactful!

Have you ever picked your child up from school and felt like everything just… falls apart?
Big emotions, meltdowns, shutdowns, or seeming “fine” one minute and overwhelmed the next.

This is often called after-school restraint collapse.

Children spend the whole day holding it together, following rules, managing expectations, and coping with sensory and social demands. When they finally get to their safe space, all that built-up pressure releases.

It’s not bad behaviour.
It’s not a sign they’re “not coping.”
It’s a sign they have been coping all day.

In this post, we’re breaking down:
What after-school restraint collapse is
Why it happens
And how you can support your child through it

Because behind those big after-school moments is a child who feels safe enough to let it all out.

Trace your finger slowly around the flower, taking a deep breath as you move along each petal.🌸

This simple activity helps children slow down, regulate their breathing, and feel calmer in moments of overwhelm.

Breathing strategies don’t have to be complicated, sometimes a gentle visual and a guided movement is all it takes.
