Pulse taking in Chinese Medicine can tell us a multitude of things about your health. Here are 3 things we are checking and what they mean!

#1 Rate:

* A fast pulse indicates excessive heat in the body. This pulse is often present when there is a fever, an inflammatory condition, or increased stress on the nervous system.

* A slow pulse indicates a cold condition or could point to a particular body system that is functioning in an inefficient or sluggish way. This pulse is often present when there are problems with blood circulation, cold hands and feet, etc.

# 2 Strength:

* A strong pulse indicates excess of some kind in the body. This pulse is often present with stress, anger, high blood pressure, and headaches.

* A weak pulse indicates a deficiency of some kind in the body. This pulse is often present with fatigue, weakness, insomnia, low blood pressure, and depression

# 3 Width:

* A thin or thready pulse indicates “Blood deficiency” or “Fluid deficiency.” This pulse is often fatigue, weakness, insomnia, nutrient deficiencies, and sub-optimal digestive absorption.

* One of the most typical wide pulses is called a rolling or slippery pulse – this one feels something like small beads rippling underneath the fingers. This pulse indicates food stagnation in the intestines, or a build-up of phlegm somewhere in the body. This pulse is often present with a variety of digestive problems and sinus/allergy congestion.

A c u l a n d ☁️ why is it that you fall asleep so quickly during acupuncture sessions? It’s actually a pretty amazing phenomenon:
When we are awake and active our brains are often using Beta waves (concentration, mental sharpness), but during acupuncture the needles put the body into a state of rest where the brain starts oscillating between Theta, Alpha, and Delta waves.
Theta- associated with REM sleep, dreaming
Alpha- relaxation, releases serotonin
Delta- deep sleep (healing sleep)

Check out these charts of an EEG test (measures the electrical activity of the brain) before and after an acupuncture treatment

(EEG images from research study done in 2019 by Tao Clinic of Acupuncture)

Can you feel the points?
The answer is different for everyone, but usually it’s a no! Sometimes you feel a tiny bit in the very beginning (because skin is sensitive) but it is less pain than pulling an eyebrow hair. Once the point is in you can sometimes feel a warmth rushing to the area, a heavy weighted feeling, or just a dull pressure in the area. It’s actually very relaxing.

One day you will wake up and notice you have less symptoms. You will feel more attuned to the messages of your body. This is healing. It isn't one day waking up as a new person. That person is born through the journey. You change while you heal because you have to work through - go through - to come out the other side. The person to attract the new experiences you seek. The new energy. You will be that energy.

"Healing" in whatever that exactly means to you is achieved through renewal. Try something new. Acupuncture, herbs, new foods, new books, acupressure! ... what will you try?

According to the most up-to-date evidence, acupuncture is an effective treatment for anxiety.

"Studies show that acupuncture is more effective than pharmacotherapy and comparable to talking therapy, making it a helpful referral choice."

"Moreover, research has revealed several known biochemical and biophysical mechanisms that may offer an explanation of how this ancient modality works."
