Lifestyle Assistance & Accommodation Service Inc

Lifestyle Assistance & Accommodation Service Inc In 1997 three houses were opened in the Riverland, two in Loxton and one in Berri.

LAAS Inc is a not for profit disability organisation operating in the Riverland SA, supporting adults with not only intellectual and physical disabilities but with behavioral and complex needs. Lifestyle Assistance & Accommodation Service Inc (LAAS) was established in 1986 in response to the need for urgent accommodation of 4 young people with intellectual disability and complex behavioural suppor

t needs. Historically, individuals with the degree of disability and behavioural support requirements had been relocated to Adelaide, however the parents of these young people lobbied for accommodation to be provided within their home region in country South Australia. LAAS now provides accommodation at four sites in Loxton, three in Berri and one in Renmark. LAAS also now offers a Day Options programme providing meaningful, developmental day activities currently accessed by 25 people including accommodated clients and individuals living with their families across the Riverland. The guiding principle of LAAS is that every person we support has the right to compassionate, professional service, which is state of the art, and is provided by respectful, caring, highly skilled staff. The people we support are not special… the staff who support them are not special…

We are all ordinary…...but are leading very extraordinary lives.

Rainy days mean we find different ways to stay connected, active and creative.

The hallway was transformed into a bowling alley for some fun and friendly competition, with plenty of laughter and smiles all round!

In our creative sessions, participants made bright and colourful wind chimes and used their imagination to transform upcycled egg cartons into cute, colourful animals.

Proof that you don’t need fancy materials to have a lot of fun and create something great!

Colourful creations at LAAS!

Participants explored creative expression through hands-on art sessions — painting wooden tiles, experimenting with colour blending, decorating reusable bags and creating imaginative “monster” masterpieces using bright, bold paints and fun textures.

Through careful brush strokes, playful splashes and googly-eyed creations, every piece reflects individuality and creativity. It’s been wonderful to see the focus, pride and smiles throughout these activities!

Our creative sessions are about more than arts and crafts. They build confidence, encourage self-expression and create opportunities to connect with others in a relaxed and supportive environment.

If you’d like to learn more about joining a Creative Arts session, we’d love to hear from you!

Today our Day Options participants designed and decorated their own hanging pots using paper cups, then visited the local hardware store to purchase what we needed to install them.
A great activity building creativity, community engagement and practical skills, and brightening up our space at the same time!

🌏 International Day of People with Disability 2025 - working together for an inclusive future 🌟

Today, we join people across Australia in recognising International Day of People with Disability — a day to celebrate inclusion, remove barriers, and honour the contributions of people with disability in our communities.

At LAAS, we’re proud to walk alongside the individuals we support every day. Their strengths, stories, achievements, and resilience enrich our organisation and our region in countless ways.

This day is an important reminder of why we do what we do:
to promote independence, uphold rights, and create opportunities where everyone belongs, participates, and thrives.

It’s been a fabulous day of celebrations bringing together clients, families and staff for our end of year Christmas party.
We are very grateful for the visit from Santa and his elves!
We also celebrated the dedicated service of some of our wonderful staff.
Thank you to the CWA and Loxton Historical Village for your generous support in making today happen, as well as our staff and families for pulling together a delicious spread for lunch and dessert!

When it comes to mental health, meaningful connections matter.

Connections with loved ones, connections with community, connections with colleagues, connections to supports and services, connections to country - and connections to yourself.

This World Mental Health Day, we are celebrating meaningful connections and raising awareness about how connections can help us achieve good mental health.

We urge every member of the community to make a connection each day. Whether thats picking up the phone and connecting with friends or family, getting out and involved in the community, or checking in on a neighbour. You never know how much a simple connection means to someone else!

If you, or someone you know is struggling, support is available. A few of the online mental health supports include:
Headspace (for people aged 12-25 and their families)
Beyond Blue (anyone feeling depressed or anxious)
Black Dog Institute (support with mood disorders)
SANE (people living with mental illness)
THIS WAY UP (support with stress, anxiety or depression)
MindSpot Clinic (support with anxiety and depression)

My apologies once again people, we have been running on all four cylinders for months now and the days are a blur!
This recap is to tell you all about last week, one. big. week.
It was for the most part an ordinary start; we held our Potluck morning tea on the Monday which everyone has been enjoying, Tuesday was a change from our usual Tunes in Berri at A. C. Care, we instead went to watch a performance called "I wish.." - all thanks to the help of Sophie Cass at the Chaffey Theatre.
Our clients sat and experienced a live performance of color, acrobatics and story telling of emotions and what they represent, engaging with the performers along with the other people in attendance.
The rest of the week played along as usual with cooking, lunches outdoors, the Berri Gymnasium.... and then Friday.
Friday just gone was our Lukes 51st birthday!
As we have been doing, we planned a birthday to suit the client and Luke is no exception.
As a surprise for him we had his best mate of many years, Marty, come over from Murray Bridge with his lovely mum Rosie and support worker Rachel, who was such a sport driving them both over just for the day!
Lukes Uncle Garry also came to celebrate with Luke, which having family here does something for our clients that none of us could ever do and having their support is everything.
Now because Luke divides his time between LAAS and Riverland Respite & Recreation Service Inc. we felt it was only fitting that we invite RRRSI to the BBQ lunch as well- the only thing was, I didn't realize that there were so many people there!
It was the biggest BBQ birthday lunch we have ever held and it would have to have been the best!
Thank you so much to everyone from RRRSI, all clients- some faces familiar, some new and to all the staff who took the time out to join us and help Luke celebrate his day, we'll have to do this again!
A special thanks to Sarah, Damian P, Paula, Mahayla and Kelli for all of your assistance and hard work in helping the day go so smoothly for Luke (and for making his cake).
Fortunately- there are no birthdays in September - so we can have a break for now!

Another week down and dusted - I've suddenly realized that I still haven't filled everyone in about the previous week!
Yep, we yarn bombed a tree, but we also created a scarecrow for the back garden, followed through with our usual daily routines and celebrated another birthday!! (Last week).
Our lady, Anne Marie celebrated her 54th birthday at the Day Options center last Friday with her friends, staff and family.
Mum, Dad, two sisters, a brother-in-law and Nephew all joined in Annies celebration and my word did she enjoy it!
Thank you all so much for joining us, everyone enjoyed your company - especially Annie!
So this week- we started Monday off with our very first Pot luck morning tea, and will continue to do this every Monday (please see flyer below).
Everyone who attended had a great time and a full belly- to the point where we will have to cut the quantities brought in by clients and staff by half!
Tuesday Tunes, Wednesday cooking day was "Taco" heaven, yesterday we were back on the trampolines at the Berri Gymnasium and plastering our corridor walls with some colorful crafts!
We talk a lot about craft in general, but this time we have something to show.
Our guys and girls have begun to make their birds and now that there is a tree for them to be perched on, there will soon be more.
A trip today out in the sunshine for fishing lead to an adventure through the Katarapko national park to Booky Cliffs campground where some new ideas for spring were born, then to the Loxton Club for a quick drink before heading home.
Now even though tomorrow is Saturday, we still have one more thing to do, and that is show our support to Luke for tomorrow at the Renmark Hotel.
He along with others will be having their heads shaved in support for another client at Riverland Respite & Recreation Service Inc. to raise some seriously needed funds, between 12-2pm in the front bar.
Please come along and help show support to everyone involved.

Till next week, have a great weekend everyone!
