Today is R U OK? Day – a valuable reminder of the importance of checking in with those around us and starting meaningful conversations.

At Pinarc, we recognise that the message behind R U OK? Day extends far beyond today. It’s about fostering a culture of care and connection, where looking out for the wellbeing of colleagues, friends, and family becomes a part of our everyday lives.

We are committed to building a supportive workplace where checking in with one another is a regular and genuine practice not just something we do once a year!

Remember, a simple conversation can make a real difference. It’s a powerful way to show support and it could even save a life.

The Tuesday Night Dinner group enjoyed a great meal together at the Robin Hood Hotel last night. They were joined by Pinarc CEO, Peter Newsome, who had fun catching up with them. All agreed they had a fantastic evening with delicious meals, including loaded nachos, porterhouse steak and curry of the day!

The Tuesday Night Dinner program runs fortnightly during school terms, with the group selecting different venues throughout Ballarat to suit everyone's taste. If you are interested in joining this fun supported social group, please call us on 1800 746 272 or email alocoordinators@pinarc.org.au and we can give you further details.

Our Preschool Field Officer team supports early childhood educators across the Central Highlands region. The team recently attended the International Childhood Trauma Conference, which enabled them to gain critical insights and knowledge on the complexities and profound impacts of childhood trauma. They will use their learnings, gained through a series of workshops, masterclasses and presentations, to support early childhood educators who are working with children who are healing from trauma.

The learnings from this conference will also be used to inform future training for our team of Kindergarten Additional Assistants, who are placed in kindergartens across the region to support an inclusive delivery of kindergarten programs to children.

At Pinarc we recognise the importance of a safe and inclusive early childhood education for every child, and the skills, expertise and empathy brought by the professional educators in the sector.

Kate, a recent occupational therapy graduate of Deakin University, joined Pinarc as a support worker at Golden Point and Pennyweight whilst she was studying. We are now delighted that she has moved to our growing OT team in Ballarat to develop her caseload, working primarily with adults. Kate hopes to use her own lived experience to support customers find creative solutions to reach their goals. In her spare time Kate enjoys spending time with her young family, her cat named Charlie and completing her many sewing and craft projects.

Speech Pathology Week is a prime time to remind ourselves that communication in all its forms is so important to build confidence and empowerment.

Marlee, a bright and bubbly teenager who enjoys watching musicals, cooking and playing games, has gained so much confidence through her sessions with Speech Pathologist Nicole. Together they explore a toolbox of different communication methods, work on building confidence communicating in different environments and strengthen Marlee's verbal communication skills.

Meet Harlow! She is only 2 and has a rare genetic syndrome which can cause speech delay in children, however she is not letting this hold her back as a recent RCH assessment shows that by using AAC communication methods, with the support of her wonderful parents, her language is typically developing! She has started using 2 and 3 word phrases with her AAC device and key word signs. Harlow loves playing cheeky games with her Speech Pathologist, asking them to open and close doors repeatedly with her device! She loves to tell them that she wants some "cheese" and is trying to copy sounds that she hears with her mouth!

Speech Pathologists support people to make choices on their devices and communicate their needs, empowering them through communication.

This week we are celebrating the Speech Pathology profession and the dedication of Certified Practising Speech Pathologists. The theme “Impact Through Communication” resonates with us and we look forward to sharing some impact stories with you, showing the importance of communication and the many different ways we can communicate.

At Pinarc we offer a coaching-based model of therapy, which also supports family members involvement in all aspects of therapy to help them develop their own skills to be able to support their child to work on their communication skills outside of direct therapy services. Our therapists can also assist with swallowing and mealtime management, working with you to improve the safety and enjoyment around eating and drinking.
