To evaluate the Lucindale Community's need for Community Health Nurses at Lucindale Health Centre, I have developed a survey on Survey Monkey.

The results of the survey will be provided to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Minister Chris Picton.

You can access the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5MV2QJF.

Please check it out; it will only take you 1-2 minutes to do, and the results are expected to be very helpful.

It will also be possible to complete the survey either over the web or on paper at the stand we will be running in the Yakka Pavilion during the Lucindale Field Days.

Please take the survey titled "Community Consultation Survey: Lucindale Local Health Services". Your feedback is important!

I am very concerned by Country Health Connect (CHC) essentially disconnecting from Lucindale. Perhaps we should call them 'Country Health Dis-Connect' since they have apparently also pulled out of Tintinara and Coonalpyn recently.

Mr Ralph James purchased the building that is now Lucindale Health Centre many years ago and then donated it to the Naracoorte Lucindale Council. The whole town then came together and helped to rebuild the Centre. There is massive social capital in Lucindale, as that community demonstrates annually by holding the Lucindale Field Days.

I must admit I feel that CHC is really not trying to meet the needs of these three rural communities and is not even looking to see what their needs really are. Instead, they have brought in a rapid and potentially devastating change in access to nursing services, with no community consultation.

A 38-year history of community nursing at Lucindale is being ignored. Instead, it seems CHC now intends only to provide a few visiting services, and then by appointment only, to small towns. Those towns have little or no other services available. CHC intends to have a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to nursing scope of practice. I believe that a range of scopes of practice is desirable for rural and remote nursing services and that a broader scope of practice is needed in remote small towns than in a major hospital setting.

My very strong recommendation is that the community nursing scope of practice is something that should recognize community needs, rather than dictate service availability. I suggest that only very experienced nurses with a broad skill base (such as those who have in fact been working in Lucindale) should be chosen (and rewarded appropriately) to work in small towns where there are few other alternative services available.

When I first started visiting Lucindale in about 1998 I was astounded at how many people with serious illness presented for the first time; Naracoorte was only about 40km away yet many did not go there for health care, suffering instead at home in Lucindale. It seemed then (and I have no reason to think the situation has really changed) that as a general rule, truly close proximity to easily accessible health services is an absolutely key factor in providing good population health.

Simple rapid access is vital for simple treatments โ€“ with the patient not having to ring and book and be told to go to Naracoorte some days later for an appointment, especially if the patient (not 'consumer') has financial difficulties or transport problems.

I shall pass a link to this discussion to Minister Chris Picton and local member Nick McBride with the strong recommendation that this decision should be reviewed as I strongly believe it threatens the health and welfare of many of my patients who are elderly, infirm or disadvantaged.

Fee Policy Changes - effective 1st July 2022
Limestone Coast Health Unit Trust has been committed to providing a high standard of medical care to our communities in the Limestone Coast for many years.
During this time our dedicated doctors, nurses, and support team have been able to provide this high level of medical care and service under a bulk billing system which ensured many of our patients were able to access healthcare when they wanted, without having to pay a fee or gap.
Over the last few years, however, these medical services have experienced an increase in costs but the Medicare Patient Rebate has failed to keep up with the rise in the cost of living. When we bulk bill we are effectively taking a 50% discount. Limestone Coast Health has absorbed these additional costs to financially assist our patients, but this is no longer sustainable if we are to continue delivering high-quality healthcare and attract and retain skilled doctors to the country.
Limestone Coast Healthโ€™s fee policy has, therefore, been reviewed and adjusted. Commencing 1st July 2022, all patients will be required to pay a gap or out-of-pocket cost, including concession and pension card holders. Pension card holders will be charged a reduced gap. Children under 16 will be bulk billed between 9 am โ€“ 5 pm. There will be no after-hours bulk billing, this includes GP consultations at Kingston Soldier's Memorial Hospital. The gap charged is in accordance with AMA guidelines. Payment in full is required on the day.
The gap payment will ensure we continue to provide a valuable service at a reasonable cost, whilst ensuring we value our work appropriately to support a sustainable medical workforce. The reality is that Medicare rebates do not cover the cost of providing you with a safe and high-quality service.
The fees charged by this practice have to cover all of our practice costs including employing receptionists and practice nurses, and meeting our operating expenses such as rent, medical equipment, electricity, computers and general insurance, medical indemnity insurance, telephone, internet costs and consumables used in our treatment room.
If you wish to let the Australian Government know that the Medicare rebate is insufficient to assist you in meeting the cost of your medical care, please contact your local Member of Parliament at http://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/Members and/or the Minister for Health:

If you experience COVID-19 symptoms, get a COVID-19 PCR test and isolate until you receive a negative result.

If you have tested negative on a rapid antigen test (RAT) and you have COVID-19 symptoms you should get a PCR test to confirm your result, as some people with COVID-19 will test negative on a RAT.

If you test positive using a RAT, you must report the result within 24 hours and this will be officially recorded as a positive result.

Even if you test negative to COVID-19, stay home until you are well and practice good hygiene.
