The VDC team are killing it abroad and we are here for it!
🤩👏🌎

Dr Nellie recently presented at multiple conferences in Manila (Philippines) AND Maui (Hawaii) on a range of topics including chronic dermatological cases, otitis, diseases of the nasal planum and refractory pruritus 🐕

Dr Callum has also been jet setting around Europe ✈️ where he presented at the AniCura Feline Medicine Congress in the Netherlands. Callum loves to talk about feline dermatology and his presentation focused on ‘unusual feline dermatoses’ 🐱🐾

We couldn’t be more proud of our VDC dermatologists 😍 Their passion and commitment to the veterinary profession is evident in the time and effort they dedicate to informing and educating fellow veterinarians about the wonderful word of Derm ❤️ (..maybe we’re a bit bias!)

Ichthyosis x 2!

We previously posted about a little legend called Daisy 🌼 the dachshund who was diagnosed with ichthyosis. Daisy’s mum reports she is doing well on a strict treatment regime and her skin is now almost completely back to normal! 🙌

The VDC Canberra team recently saw these 2 cuties - Moose & Bindi - Italian greyhound siblings who were diagnosed with ichthyosis 😱 This was determined on histopathology (biopsy) 🔬

This condition is quite rare in veterinary dermatology, so it’s unusual to see multiple cases in quick succession.

Furthermore, the dachshund & Italian greyhound are uncommon breeds to suffer from ichthyosis.

According to a 2025 case report published in the Veterinary Dermatology journal, (amongst other peer reviewed literature), canine 🐶 breed-associated ichthyosis is reported in the;

•Golden retriever
•American bulldog
•West highland white terrier
•Great Dane
•Cavalier King Charles spaniel
•Jack Russell terrier
•Norfolk Terrier
•German shepherd
•Labrador retriever

Veterinary dermatologists treat so much more than allergies! No matter the skin condition, VDC is here to help your pet 💕🐕‍🦺🐈🐾

Blaze’s video otoscopy (VO) with Vet Derm Clinic at our Atarmon location, 🐶

Blaze the cavoodle presented to VDC for persistent left sided ear infections. Despite numerous doses of medicated ear gels and drops, Blaze continued to suffer from itchy, painful, ye**ty ears.

Blaze’s GP vet quickly referred him to the VDC team for further assessment. Today Blaze underwent a deep ear clean using our Karl Storz otoscope. Otoscopy allows complete access to and visualisation of the external ear canal, enabling thorough cleansing and flushing of cerumen (wax), hair and other ear debris. A deep ear clean also enables application of topical anti fungal/antibiotic ear medications 🦠 that are instilled deep into the ear canal to treat the ear infection 👂

Blaze woke up from his procedure feeling so much better and was so happy to see his mum at the end of the day! 💙 We’ll see Blaze back in a week to ensure everything is going well.

Well done Blaze!

The VDC team recently attended a one day workshop with Prof. Dr. Gerhard Oechtering (DVM, DipECVAA) during his visit with the Medipaws surgery team.

Dr. Gerhard discussed his new approach to the diagnosis and management of feline otitis media.

The feline middle ear (aka tympanic bulla) consists of 2 distinct cavities; the dorsolateral and ventromedial chamber. These are completely separated anatomically by a bony septum. Clinically, this means the entire feline middle ear cannot be thoroughly flushed during video otoscopy due to the cat’s unique anatomy.

Dr. Gerhard demonstrated a new technique, known as septal trephination. This involves careful incision through the bony septum to enable access to, and visualisation of the ventromedial chamber. This is an extremely beneficial skill for our team and enables us to adapt our current approach to feline otitis media for improved patient outcome.

We are so fortunate to be able to learn from international specialists such as Gerhard and we are grateful to continue to offer the very best veterinary care to our patients.

🐱 Feline herpesvirus dermatitis: before and after

Did you know that feline herpes virus (FHV-1), a common cause of ‘cat flu’ can also cause an ulcerative facial dermatitis in some cats? Crusted skin lesions affect the nasal planum, nasal bridge and peri-ocular region. Affected cats may or may not have concurrent respiratory symptoms 🤧

Pictured is Alfie, a very sweet domestic short hair who was diagnosed with FHV-1 dermatitis via skin biopsy and IHC.

Treatment included cidofovir, a potent topical antiviral cream 🧴and famciclovir, an oral antiviral 💊

The key is to prevent future flares: 📝

-Minimise stress eg. Catteries, vet visits, moving house etc.
-Avoid introducing new cats into the household 🐈‍⬛🐈🐈‍⬛
-Do not use systemic steroids in these cats where possible 👩🏼‍⚕️
