What helps me to keep grounded and nourish a sense of perspective in troubling times when there are so many daily cues of threat in the news and social media?
I keep practicing the skill of self-compassion.
I pause, learning to recognise and acknowledge the difficult emotions of my own distress at what i see and hear, naming the feelings, thoughts or emotions and allowing them to be instead of suppressing and avoiding them. This gives space for them to be without feeling like they overcome me.
After all, it is not abnormal to feel this way, and i know i am in good company of many other caring humans who may also feel overwhelmed right now!
I allow myself self-compassion, kindness, feeling the warmth of my heart and nourish myself in the moment with a soothing, kind thought towards myself and the wellbeing of those involved or suffering. It is the gift i can give myself and others- the gift of deeply wishing them well and of wellbeing from my heart.
I might also look out the window and see nature, feel gratitude and awe for this beautiful planet. Think of the wonderful humans and animals in my life and feel gratitude.
I allow myself in a supportive way to be just as i am in that moment, in a supportive way and i find that it allows the experience to be honoured, to pass and not feel so overwhelmed and helpless.
For me it is the meaning of family, friends, community, love, connection, compassion and shared humanity that i find continues to give me hope and meaning in challenging times.
In gratitude to the kindness, love, tenderness and compassion that i experience, see and hear about in this world we share.
And for all of my fb friends that i am connected with,
Blessings,
