This week in our practice, we are dedicating time to Sun Salutations โ and it feels like the perfect moment to reflect on the deeper connection we have with the sun itself.
Across cultures and traditions, the sun has always been more than just a life-giving force. It has been honoured as a guide, a source of wisdom, and a reminder of the rhythms that sustain us. In the yogic tradition, Surya โ the sun god โ is seen as a bringer of light and spiritual awakening. Surya is often depicted riding a golden chariot pulled by seven horses, symbolising the seven chakras and the spectrum of light that touches all of life. The Gayatri Mantra, one of yogaโs most sacred prayers, is dedicated to this radiant energy, asking for the sunโs light to illuminate our hearts and minds.
When we move through Sun Salutations, we are not only warming and energising the body โ we are also participating in an ancient ritual of honouring the cycles of nature, of recognising the sun as both teacher and sustainer. Just as ancient civilisations marked solstices and equinoxes as sacred turning points, each salute to the sun can become a small ritual of gratitude and renewal.
So as we flow together this week, let each movement become an offering โ a way of honouring the light outside of us, and the light within. ๐ค
