First of all…

Let me just say that the intent of this post is NOT at all meant to be insensitive to or condemning people suffering or who are in pain

On the contrary, it is to help you realize that pain is complex and that there are MULTIPLE contributing factors as to why pain persists long after you thought it should be gone (or at least more under control)

Of course, as a physical therapist, I am a HUGE fan of exercise and movement when it comes to overcoming pain and injury, but if you ignore or are ignorant to all of the other things that could be playing a part (many times a LARGE part) in your pain experience, you’ll end up frustrated and confused as to why you aren’t getting better

Some things that you may have not thought of that may contribute:

- Fear of movement
- Post-traumatic stress
- Depression
- Lack of sleep
- Anxiety/stress
- Poor social support
- Autoimmune disorders
- Poor understanding of the condition
- Repetitive movements or postures
- Poor diet and/or hydration
- Excessive worry or constant focus on the pain
- Catastrophizing (always thinking the worst)
- Training errors/poor workout programming

If you’ve found yourself wondering why you’re not improving like you should be (and you’ve been medically cleared of any significant red flags), consider other reasons why that might be (maybe even some things from the list above)

Those might just be crucial to helping you overcome the painful issue you can’t seem to get past!
