Day whatever of school holidays and someone has already requested screens before 8am. Solidarity. 😅

Here's one that gets them outside and keeps them busy long enough for you to actually think a full thought:

🏡 Chalk Town on the Driveway Draw roads, houses, a school, shops — then hand it over. Let them drive toy cars through it, walk little figurines around, or just go full abstract artist and cover the whole driveway.

Why we love it: it sparks imagination, gets little bodies moving, and quietly builds the pencil pressure and hand control they'll use when they start writing. But they just think it's the best thing ever.

💜 4 years of loving this sweet little man 💜

Our Mister has always been full of surprises! He first surprised us by arriving 10 days early weighing a teeny 2.9kg. What he may lack in size, he’s always made up for in fire and fierce independence!

He is a sensitive soul and often surprises us with his deep consideration of the world around him, and the big words he uses to describe it.

He loves a challenge and took on his role as a big brother like a champ. He is his sister’s biggest fan and protector - no one is allowed to mess with her (except for him 😝), and still often surprises us with how sweet he can be with her.

We could not be more proud of him and while navigating parenting him has been our biggest challenge, it’s also been our greatest joy as we’ve watched him grow into such a beautiful little boy.

Something about 4 just feels different, like we’ve officially moved out of toddlerhood, and we can’t wait to see what comes next 🥰

The research is really clear on this — the biggest predictor of a smooth start to school isn't whether your child can write their name or recite the alphabet. It's whether they feel comfortable in a school-like environment. Whether they can ask for help, connect with other kids, and follow along in a group without feeling lost or overwhelmed.

These are skills. Real, buildable skills. And building them through play — before the pressure of school even begins — makes all the difference.

I started Absolutely 4 Kids on maternity leave — sitting in my spare room with my 8-month-old playing on the floor beside me.

I was home, and I loved every second of it. But I also really, truly missed working with kids. Teaching isn't just a job for me — it's kind of just who I am.

So I started tutoring. Just a few students, just to keep that part of me alive.

And the more I worked one-on-one and in small groups, the more I realised something I'd always known but never had the space to act on inside a classroom of 28: every single child learns differently — and every single child deserves to feel like they're capable.

In a big classroom, even the most dedicated teacher can't always give every child that. Not because they don't care — but because the system makes it almost impossible.

A4K started as a way to fill that gap. And it's grown into something I'm really proud of. A place where kids get to feel successful, at their own pace, in their own way. 💜

Are you a mum who just needs 5 minutes to drink a hot coffee these Easter holidays? Same. 😅

This playdough activity has been saving me since my kids were tiny — and the nature treasure hunt beforehand is half the fun. Send them outside to collect leaves, sticks, rocks, petals, whatever they can find — then let them press it all into playdough and go make yourself that coffee. ☕

Sneaky teacher secret? Pressing objects into playdough builds the exact hand strength little ones need for writing. But they absolutely do not need to know that.

Here's something I wish more parents knew about how children actually learn best…

It's not sitting still. It's not copying from a board. And it's definitely not drilling flashcards until something sticks. 😅

It's called multisensory learning — and it's the foundation of everything we do at Absolutely 4 Kids.

When children use more than one sense at a time — touching, seeing, hearing, moving — their brain activates multiple pathways simultaneously. More pathways firing = deeper understanding = information that actually stays.

In our sessions, that looks like pushing counters to segment sounds, squishing playdough into syllables, and holding colourful number blocks and feeling how 3 and 7 really do make 10. It looks like visual support on the table and little hands busy doing real, meaningful work.

As a teacher AND a mum, I can tell you — this is the difference between a child who performs a skill in a session and forgets it by Friday, and one who genuinely gets it and carries it with them.
