👁️💡 Eye Education: Eye Allergies (Allergic Conjunctivitis)
Are your eyes itchy, watery, and red? With spring in full swing, you may be experiencing eye allergies - also known as allergic conjunctivitis. This happens when your eyes react to allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander, or mold. 🌸🐾
What causes eye allergies?
When allergens enter the eye, the immune system overreacts by releasing histamine, leading to inflammation and irritation.
Common symptoms include:
Itchy, red, or burning eyes
Watery or teary eyes
Puffy eyelids
Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
Symptom relief tips:
Avoid rubbing your eyes (it can exacerbate symptoms)
Use lubricating/artificial tears to flush out allergens
Apply a cool compress
Consider antihistamines or prescription eye drops (in consultation with your optometrist)
Keep windows closed on high pollen days
Wear sunglasses or glasses to create a physical barrier between the environment and your eyes, limiting the amount of allergens your eyes are exposed to.
📆 While eye allergies are very common, if symptoms are persistent or more severe, it’s important to book an eye examination to rule out other potential causes.
