Located since 2003 on the Northern bank of the Pioneer River, the Mater Private Hospital Mackay is a modern 105 Bed Catholic Healthcare facility operated in the Mercy tradition. The Hospital is staffed by dedicated healthcare professionals who are committed to the delivery of high quality, compassionate, holistic healthcare services. The Pastoral Care staff at the Mater Hospital provide spiritual, emotional and compassionate care and support to patients, their families and staff. The Hospital Chapel is always open to anyone who needs a quiet place to pray or reflect.
Specialties at the Mater include oncology, medical, surgical, obstetric, coronary care and palliative care unit. X-ray, pathology and pharmacy services are also available. The Mater , in partnership with James Cook University, established the onsite Mater JCU Clinical Training Centre. A JCU Bachelor of Science Degree may be undertaken at this site. The Mater Mackay also participates in the Commonwealth Medical Intern Program, in collaboration with the Mackay Hospital and Health Service, as well as being a recognised training site for James Cook Medical Students.
McAuley House Accommodation Units are also conveniently and securely located within the grounds of the Hospital offering accommodation to both patients and families receiving treatment at the Hospital. The provision of this on-site accommodation is of enormous benefit to patients from outside the city of Mackay as healing and recovery from illness or surgery is enhanced by having loved ones close at hand.
For the past almost 90 years, the Mater has endeavoured to foster a close and caring relationship with the wider community. This focus on engagement with the community has resulted in the Mater Mackay being warmly embraced and generously supported by the people of Mackay and surrounds. The ongoing investment in further developing and upgrading the facilities and services at the Hospital is a tangible way of expressing to the people of the Mackay region the sincere appreciation of the Mater community for this ever present encouragement and support.
