Tinnitus may have a profound impact BUT it can be managed!

Sometimes our brain 🧠 decides that these tinnitus sounds are an important threat, so it highlights these messages in the brain’s emotional control centre. This means our attention is drawn to the tinnitus and “fight or flight” response kicks in.

Tinnitus can have a significant impact on individuals lives however the more we understand our tinnitus, the more we can regain control and actively work towards reducing its impact on our life.
The first step is to get in touch with your GP and/or audiologist who can check your hearing, help you understand your tinnitus and discuss a management plan.

If you experience tinnitus, please contact Mackay Hearing to book a comprehensive diagnostic hearing and tinnitus assessment. Consultations solely focusing on tinnitus management and support are also available if required.

What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is a perceived internal noise, commonly presenting as a ringing, buzzing, static or ‘insect-like’ (especially cicadas) sound that only people experiencing the condition can hear.
It can be constant or occasional, loud or soft, mild or severe, and can be heard in one or both ears or in the head. Tinnitus can happen to people of any age or background.
Causes of tinnitus?
There are many possible causes of tinnitus, and tinnitus can be a symptom of other underlying health issues. Examples of potential causes and aggravators of tinnitus include:
🔸Hearing loss
🔸Exposure to loud sounds or sudden high impact noises
🔸Head, neck or jaw injuries or issues
🔸Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress
🔸Outer and middle ear pathologies – wax blockage in the ear canal, infections, calcification of the eardrum or ossicles (middle ear bones)
But tinnitus is actually generated by the brain. The nerves in the hearing pathway of the brain are “turned up”, so we are listening to sounds made by our own body.

T is not just for Tuesday it is also for Tinnitus, often called ringing in the ears 👂🛎

Tinnitus Awareness Week started yesterday, and it is an important topic to highlight as approximately one in three people in Australia have experienced tinnitus at some point in their life and about one in six live with constant tinnitus (Soundfair, 2025).

This week we will be sharing further information on what Tinnitus is, it’s causes and impacts and how it can be managed.

Check out Tinnitus Awareness https://www.facebook.com/tinnitusawarenessau by Soundfair for stories, research and loads of other useful information.
