Osseointegration Group The freedom of mobility and the gift of comfort provided by revolutionary technology in prosthetics

The Osseointegration Group of Australia provides a team approach to assist amputees with the possibility of greater and more effortless mobility using the newest innovation in the field of prosthetics, the OGAP-OPL. Through osseointegration surgery Dr Munjed Al Muderis and The Osseointegration Group of Australia provide above and below knee amputees with a leg replacement using the OGAP-OPL implan

t which is designed to be a close to the human anatomy as possible. The surgery involves an implant being inserted into an amputee’s femur or tibia which, when integrated with the bone allows for a simple, quick, safe connection between the stump and the lower prosthesis. Osseointegration surgery provides amputees with greater mobility, comfort and quality of life.

Newly-elected Labour MP Ali France made waves in May this year as she unseated the former liberal party leader Peter Dutton MP from his own seat of Dickson, around an hour north of Brisbane.

Ali’s journey to Australia’s parliament has been long and her life full of ups and downs. In 2011, she was hit by an out-of-control car in an underground car park at Brisbane Shopping Centre, which crushed her left leg from the thigh down. Bystanders rendered first aid; her life was saved in the ER. But her leg was unsalvageable.

In an emotional first address to Parliament, she paid tribute to those who helped her to survive that terrible accident and to Professor Munjed Al Muderis, who enabled her to stand tall again as one of the first limb loss patients in Australia to receive osseointegration.

Join us next week at the IPSO World Congress in Sweden!

On Tuesday 17th of June 2025, Prof. Munjed Al Muderis and colleagues from Osseointegration Group will be exploring the future of osseointegration in clinical practice at the Twentieth International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) congress in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

Offering a four-day program of high-quality scientific research from world-leading professionals across a range of disciplines, delivered to an audience of thousands, the IPSO congress is a key date in the international orthopaedic calendar, and this year returns to Europe for the first time in over a decade.

From refugee to pioneering surgeon: Munjed Al Muderis

World-leading osseointegration surgeon Prof. Munjed Al Muderis, was forced to flee his native Iraq in 1999 for his own safety after refusing to carry out an order that went against his ethical and professional principles.

He arrived in Australia by boat and spent time in detention before beginning the long process of rebuilding his medical career. From early jobs outside of medicine to retraining, requalifying, and eventually returning to surgical work - his path was shaped by persistence and purpose.
Today, Prof. Al Muderis is a world renowned orthopaedic surgeon specialising in limb reconstruction and osseointegration. He has helped restore mobility to over 1500 people living with limb loss and continues to contribute to surgical education, innovation, and humanitarian work both in Australia and abroad.

During the launch of The Al Muderis Osseointegration Clinic at Burjeel Medical City, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings, announced an extraordinary humanitarian gesture: the donation of 10 fully funded osseointegration surgeries for individuals living with limb loss who would otherwise be unable to access care.
Inspired by the story of Sham and Omar, two Syrian siblings who lost their limbs in the 2022 earthquake and were treated at Burjeel, this initiative highlights the life-changing potential of osseointegration and the strength of this growing partnership.

These procedures will be carried out at The Al Muderis Osseointegration Clinic, where patients will receive advanced limb reconstruction and prosthetic care under the leadership of Prof. Munjed Al Muderis.

Linda’s Osseo Story – Maintenance

Linda, who has lived with osseointegration for 10 years, shares her experience with long-term maintenance. Over the past decade, her only hospital visits related to the implant were for a dual cone replacement and a refashioning procedure.
She also notes that living near a saltwater lake has allowed her to regularly swim in natural water, which she finds helpful for cleaning and overall healing around the stoma site.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s experience is different, and this post reflects Linda’s personal journey.

How do you prepare a short residuum for osseointegration?

A recent study [1] explored this very question, with reference to case of a 36-year-old farmer who had undergone bilateral above-knee amputation following an accident at work. His injuries meant that, while his right femur was suitable for a standard osseointegrated prosthetic limb (OPL) implant, his left femur – which measured only 9.2 cm — was too short.

The solution? Design and fabrication of a custom MILN to increase the length of the residual bone.

Lengthening was carried out at a rate of between 0.5mm and 1mm per day and, once complete, imaging confirmed good bone growth and consolidation – and an increase in the length of the residual limb of [LENGTH]. With the nail removed, and the patient doing well, the osseointegration could proceed!

This case demonstrates how important a patient-centred surgical approach is to achieving the best possible outcomes. The innovative combination of multiple reconstructive techniques means that even those with very complex needs can be treated successfully.
