With the winter months fast approaching you may have started noticing a change in your breathing. This is due to cold air containing less moisture and breathing it in can "dry out" the airways. When this happens, the airways begin to narrow and you may feel short of breath.

If you are someone with existing lung diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD), asthma or other lung diseases, the cold air can make breathing more difficult.

Here are a few tips for when leaving the house:

❄️ Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
Your nose is more efficient at humidifying and warming the air than your mouth

❄️ Wear a mask or scarf to wrap around your nose and mouth.
These items can help trap some of the heat and moisture from your breath

❄️ Avoid exercising outside.
Breathing heavier during exercise in cold weather can increase the symptoms of asthma, COPD or other lung diseases

❄️ Always keep your puffers handy.
If you are an asthmatic or have been prescribed a puffer, please ensure you have it with you to prevent/ treat an asthma attack or flare up of your condition

A full lung function test measures how well your lungs are working.

It usually comprises of 3 tests
- An assessment of your airways (spirometry)
- A measurement of how much air is in your lungs (lung volumes)
- How efficiently your lungs are moving oxygen into your body (gas transfer)

To obtain accurate results the following steps are required:

- Please withhold all inhalers on day of testing as it is best to assess your lung function without the influence of any inhalers

- Avoid heavy exercise, alcohol consumption or smoking of any kind on the day of testing as these can lead to incorrect results

- As you will be required to fill your lungs as much as possible, please avoid wearing any restrictive clothing that might limit your chest from expanding

- If you have any recent blood tests (within 3 months) please bring them to your appointment as knowing a certain parameter strengthens the accuracy of your lung function test

We look forward to seeing you at your next appointment 😊

Highlighting Macquarie University Hospital and MQ Health Respiratory and Sleep’s first in human trial of the Noah Medical Galaxy Robotic Bronchoscopy system. This is a major advance in the diagnosis and management of lung cancer, with the early accurate and safe diagnosis of peripheral lung nodules a priority.

β€œA robot is helping doctors detect the very early stages of lung cancer. The disease affects more than 14,000 Australians each year and a lack of screening means it's often picked up too late. ”
