Wide awake at 2am (again) even though you’re shattered?
You are not a “bad sleeper”, your hormones are doing a number on your nervous system.

Around 40–60% of women in peri and post menopause report sleep problems and hot flushes and night sweats are a major trigger for broken sleep and next-day exhaustion.

Studies show women with menopausal insomnia have poorer quality of life, more low mood and more struggles at work and home, so no, you’re not being dramatic when you say you can’t function.

The good news? Simple shifts like cooling your bedroom, protecting a calming wind-down routine, cutting back late caffeine and alcohol, regular movement and CBT-based tools can all improve sleep quality in midlife women and CBT-I is now recognised as a first-line treatment for menopausal insomnia.

Weight creeping on around your middle and nothing you used to do is working?
You’re not broken, your hormones and metabolism have changed.

Studies suggest 60–70% of midlife women gain weight during the menopause transition and belly fat can jump from around 5–8% of total body fat pre-menopause to 15–20% after.

Dropping oestrogen shifts fat storage from your hips and thighs to your waist, while muscle naturally declines 3–8% per decade after 30, so you burn fewer calories even when you’re “being good”.

This is why random diets, cutting carbs to nothing and hammering yourself with cardio just leave you more tired, hungry and fed up, they strip muscle and slow your metabolism further.

Instead, midlife weight loss needs a different approach: strength training, higher protein, daily movement and realistic, steady nutrition that works with your changing hormones, not against them.

You’re not failing at weight loss in menopause, you just haven’t been given a strategy built for a 40+ body.
