🚽 Toilet Training Tips from OT! 🌟
Toilet training isn’t just about using the potty! it’s a big developmental step that involves body awareness, motor planning, sensory processing, and independence skills. Every child learns at their own pace, and that's okay! 👶✨
As OTs, we support families with strategies that build confidence, routine, and success - one small step at a time. 💪🧻

Keeping it simple, playing should be supported and encouraged. As we grow, our 'play' develops;
✅ In early childhood (0–7 years), play is often imaginative, physical, and exploratory.
✅ In middle childhood (7–12 years), play includes more rules, teamwork, and skill-building (like sports or games).
✅ Teens (13–18 years) still engage in “play” through hobbies, sports, video games, creative activities, and social interactions — they just may not call it play.
✅ Even adults benefit from playful activities, though we often label them as “leisure” or “recreation.”

👉 In occupational therapy, we see play as a lifelong, meaningful occupation — it just changes form across the lifespan.

Did you know a simple game of Go Fish can support a whole range of Occupational Therapy goals?

Here’s what we’re really working on while playing:

🧠 Cognitive Skills – memory, focus, problem-solving, and turn-taking
🗣️ Social Communication – asking and answering questions, waiting turns, using polite language
✋ Fine Motor Skills – picking up and holding cards, finger dexterity
🔁 Executive Functioning – planning, impulse control, and flexible thinking
😊 Emotional Regulation – managing frustration, learning to win or lose gracefully

Sometimes the best therapy comes disguised as a game. 🎉
Let’s keep it fun AND functional! 🧩✨

When was the last time you skipped a rope?
Skipping is a great exercise which has so many benefits for people of all ages!
It improves heart health, coordination and balance, reduces stress and anxiety! If you do it with a friend, your siblings or your kids, it encourages social engagement.
It's a high calorie burning exercise, which improves agility, muscle strength and helps strengthen bones. By doing exercise, it increases energy levels, improves focus and concentration and has mental benefits.

Function Friday - Doing Your Hair!
When doing your hair, a few more core occupational therapy (OT) skills come into play (in addition to the above). They are:

🌸Motor Planning – Planning and sequencing the steps involved in styling your hair.
🌻Range of Motion – Reaching over your head while styling.
💮Visual Perception – Judging parting lines, symmetry, or using a mirror effectively.
🌹Tactile Discrimination – Feeling the texture of hair or tools to adjust pressure and grip.
🌷Sensory Processing – Managing reactions to smells, product textures, or hair dryers.
🌼Executive Functioning – Organizing steps, timing, and adjusting strategies if needed.
🌵Attention and Focus – Staying concentrated to complete the hairstyle.
🌾Postural Control and Balance – Maintaining an upright seated or standing position while doing your hair.
These OT-related skills show how self-care tasks like doing your hair involve complex coordination between the brain and body.
